Player: Hey, don't touch that building, I'm still building it! Griefer: I'm shure you don't really need these gold blocks, you have plenty. DM: LIGHTNING BOLT! Griefer was smitten Player: Thanx!
as a 3D artist I could think of hundreds of uses. As for gameplay, this could be very useful in strategic-type games, like mobas or perhaps even team-based fps'es. Being able to look at the map like this would allow you to see changes in the world much faster than if you were on a screen, having to pan towards it first. It could allow for a lot of strategic planning.
Another idea, remember in Tomb Raider you had to spin around artifacts to find hidden details that could tell you more about the artifact? Imagine being able to take that artifact out of the screen and really inspect it.
You could even pull in into a first-person game. Imagine looking at your screen, playing the game as normal, but next to your screen there's a second HUD showing things like different stats, the map, perhaps even an interface that allows you to quickly change armor configuration without having to leave the game window. Not even your mouse has to leave the game window! If they can pull this off in a way that consumers can realistically buy these (and it becomes interesting for developers to develop for it), I really see a ton of potential in this.
Honestly, I don't see how this could be very helpful. It might be cool for a little bit, but let me ask you something: when would you actually use this? Now, I don't mean try it out for five or ten minutes, I mean when would you genuinely use this. Most likely once or twice, before it would lose it's gusto. Besides maybe as a party trick or to cheat (via looking at the world underneath for diamonds, etc.) sure, but there is no real reason for this to exist outside of being cool. Now now, I know I'm just being a cynical jerk who should be amazed at it, and I am. It looks really cool. But I see now actual purpose for this to exist besides looking cool.

I love this!! Imagine being able to play Minecraft on your living room table one day. 😀 Heck, even the whole living room!?
FREE with purchase of Minecraft (just like everything else in the game). Right? 😛
AMAZING! Imagine if you could use this on servers and use it to spectate survival games. It would be the true Hunger Games experience.
