In Valhalla, the player assumes the role of Eivor, a Viking raider from Norway who leads raids and battles against King Aelfred and the four Anglo-Saxon medieval kingdoms of England – Wessex, Northumbria, East Anglia, and Mercia – near the end of the 9th century. The game will continue to tie into modern-day events involving Abstergo Industries’ researcher Layla Hassan, who appeared in Origins and Odyssey, and the Templars and Assassins that tie the series together.

Players can play Eivor as male or female and customize their hair, warpaint, clothing, and armor. Dual-wielding of almost any weapon has been added. Eivor’s animal companion will be a raven with “Eagle Eye” mechanics. As in Origins and Odyssey, the player can use the raven to scout nearby areas. As Eivor progresses through the game, the player will select skills from skill trees rather than level up. Enemies’ skills will be rated. The skills trees will be like The Witcher, Fallout 4, and Skyrim. Conversation and gameplay choices affect characters’ political alliances with non-player characters.

The player, as Eivor, builds and leads the game’s settlement. “A lot of what you do in the game world feeds into the settlement so it can grow,” said Ismail. The player can build certain types of buildings that benefit gameplay. The player must lead viking raids to collect resources for these structures. Naval combat will return, but more as a faster means of travel for raids and escaping land combat.

Valhalla is a single-player game with online components to encourage player sharing.
