Every few months Google releases a big update for its smartphones that they refer to as Pixel Feature Drops. The company just released one of these big updates for the month of December and adds a feature called Clear Calling to the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro smartphones.

This is a feature Google had originally announced at the Made by Google hardware launch event earlier this year but it had taken some additional time to get it to the point where it was ready for public use. The goal with Clear Calling is to make the voice on the other end of the call sound more clear.

The feature is able to do this by processing the voice data on the device and using noise cancellation methods, some AI, and machine learning to output an audio stream that is easier to hear. Google says that Clear Calling is dependant on WiFi and your mobile data connection with some saying it is only going to work on VoLTE phone calls.

However, it should be pointed out that all of this audio data is processed directly on the Pixel 7 or Pixel 7 Pro and none of it is sent to Google’s servers. I have also read that this feature should make its way to the Pixel 6 series in the coming months.

Since this feature is optional, it needs to be manually enabled ahead of time. But, if you’re not happy with how the feature is processing your audio calls, it can be turned off in the middle of your call.

To enable Clear Calling on the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, we first need to open up the Settings application. From here, you can either search for Clear Calling at the top of the application or you can find it in the menus by tapping the Sound & Vibration option. It’s here that you’ll find the new feature tucked away at the bottom of the list.

All we need to do is tap this toggle here and the device will then work its magic when you are on a phone call. But remember, even though this feature has been enabled, if you are in an area with poor mobile data service then the quality of the phone call may not be as good as it could be.

It should still be better than if the feature was never enabled, but it does require a solid mobile connection in order for it to work.

Use the comments section below to tell me about your experiences with this new Google Pixel feature. In my experience it doesn’t completely eliminate all background noises but it can pick up on some common noises and that has made it easier to understand the person on the other end of the call.
