Samsung 980 PRO Review. Worth It? Watch Before You Buy

This Samsung 980 PRO Review has a goal. Is it worth it and should you buy. After watching all the reviews out there, reading up on all the issues of the different NVMe drives, and seeing first hand experience the epic caching slow downs of the Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus, I put this to Samsung 980 Pro to the test.

I compare the data from tests I ran this Samsung 980 Pro m.2 NVMe SSD with the Western Digital SN850 and the Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus. As a bonus I also through a quick chat about the Samsung 970 Pro. I will make a specific video on that and comparing it to the Gen 4 drives.

Caching issues should not be present and we should be enjoying a great drive by the consistent go to drive producer I have always counted on.

Hey so I recently purchased the 980 Pro (with Heatsink) [ 2 tb ] and I solely purchased that one only bc I just wanted to max out the HD that the mini pc (that I purchased along with it) had said that it can hold. I plan to max out its specs so that why I chose the one with heatsink….
Do you know if that extra feature would really make a difference if I was using it to keep music on, Pro dj programs & music production type of stuff?? (which will be equivalent to running like a high intensity game, for the more average user, the amount of DJs out there i know are limited, esp when it comes to Windows OS)

I'm a Samsung fanboy and was using a 970Evo in my x570. I moved the 970 down a slot and put a 980Pro 2TB in and find it really rocks for my OS!
And that Samsung Magician is great.
Since my files are usually just a few GB things move fast, sometimes the status bar won't even open.'
But when I move large folders, say 250GB, things slow down after 80GB or so, and down to 500 mps, then down to 200's…. But that doesn't happen often for me. Just when re-arranging folders trying to even things out and have space enough on them all.
Hey, you should do a video on how to store and save data. I'm using freefilesynce a free open-source app that you can run on two machines.

I have one to. It’s amazing

BRAVOTEAM101

Can you PLEASE measure a 1 tb to a 1tb

I have the 980 pro 1tb. Seems pretty fast for gaming, and never goes above 50c.

Hey there, GREAT video – thanks for sharing. Quick question that I hope
you can help with….Just bought a 2021 Acer Nitro 5 AN517-54-77KG
Gaming Laptop (Intel Core i7-11800H, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050Ti, 17.3"
FHD 144Hz IPS Display, 16GB DDR4, 1TB NVMe SSD, Killer Wi-Fi 6) and have
the ability to expand either to a 2.5 SSD or HDD. Which would you
recommend is better for overall performance and streaming? I'm torn
between adding another SSD, HDD or upgrading the NVMe SSD and adding
another SSD/HDD…..so confused to which. Please help???

Great video. I would like a suggestion please: I am building a gaming pc with z690 & 12700k. I wanted to do a configuration with a disk dedicated to windows + various software and another disk where I would only install the games. Does this seem like a good setup? Considering that I received a 980 pro 1tb as a gift, should I use it as a windows disc or game disc? Which one would you recommend to buy for the other function?

A couple of things to note: Garbage collection software and Trim. This are triggered by Samsung controller software when the drive is in passive mode. Windows sends maintenance requests to the drive controller when the maintenance schedules execute in windows which is mostly when the pc is on and not in use. I’m not saying that this is the cause, but I have the same drive 980 Pro 2TB with Heatsink as my OS drive and another 980 Pro 2 TB (no heatsink) for additional storage. And didn’t experience any issues. I use my PC mostly for gaming. For the OS drive I have a bunch of games like Apex, Battlefield, COD, etc. The other drive I haven’t consume it space yet , but it’s installed. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I have purchased 980 pro and it is detected in my asus tuf laptop with i7 11th Gen.
But the magician software says driver is not supported and when checked benchmark it came with 3444 MB read and 3323 MB write speeds.
Any idea on how to get suitable driver?

John Doh

Don't know how you were running it but it is recommended you run the 980 Pro with a heatsink. That keeps away the heat issues. You either buy the drive with the heatsink, or if your MB has a heatsink you buy the one without.

For caching, and large writes, this is a problem I have with recommendations based on this one issue alone. Most people don't write large amounts of data to an NVMe. NVMe drives tend to be used as the boot drive or a scratch drive for building files to. Once a file is built, you will then read the file OFF the drive to write to other storage. They can also be extra drives for those who have large game libraries. Me personally, I can fit all my games onto a 1TB NVMe drive that's also the boot drive. The 980 Pro will meet the requirements for DirectStorage.

Now, in a server config caching issues COULD be an problem, but it would depend on the type of server and how the drive is being used in the server.

Yes I'm sure there are some people that for some reason will write a large file to an NVMe drive, for a desktop PC use case, but I don't think it's common.

I would highly recommend this for a gaming drive.

I usually buy Samsung not for being the fastest but for being reliable. I never had an issue with a Samsung SSD.

Can you do a review on Samsung 980 nvme SSD?

UXLDVGSTDZLOA

I bought this item. Unfortunately, My mainbord doesn't support gen 4.0 but, I have a satisfaction with lower temperature than 970 evo plus.

What microphone are you using, the quality on it is phenomenal

What camera do you have?

This is the content I want to see! Subscribed.

Just curious I bought a strix B550f board, a 980 pro and have a 970 evo plus.

I plan on using the 980 pro in the gen 4 slot (obvs) and the 970 ep in the lower gen 3 slot. Does having both drives in use at the same time affect the performance of either drive on b550 or is this set up optimal?

Also in my case is it ok to use the primary m. 2 (980 pro) for gaming? Or is there a benifit to putting games on a second drive? (I've always wondered what most people did)

Thanks and Happy Canada day!

I have the SN850 in my PC rig and just bought the 980 Pro to put in my XPS 15 9500 Im still waiting for it to arrive so i will have to let you know. Should be interesting to see differences between being installed in the laptop and my pc…

Johnny Wong

Sorry I did not quite catch your reasoning for the 980 pro not being the ideal for gaming. At 11:30 you mention something like you'd probably use a different drive for storage of the games anyway. Would you mind elaborating more on that?

perfect! I did buy it on sale just now, then I checked out your video and I was kinda scared that I would have to Cancel the order but I will mainly use it as my boot / Storage drive. So a lot of writing the first days but then mainly reading 👌
So I guess I will be fine.
Thanks for the video though. I already have a sabrent (pretty full) and I did notice that caching issue. I had no clue what was causing it but your vid helped with that as well 👍

woww, it came out

I am in the market of a gen 4 ssd, did you have the lastest firmware from samsung? which other brands would you recommend?

Offi Matrix

all m.2 nvme drives throttle once there hit 80c or over even with a heat sink so there will hit top speed in short file read and rights. But big files will always drop speed after around 2mins when nvme starts to reach 80c.
