“I believe it is time for us to make the maritime industry a top priority. While we already hold a dominant position in the world of global shipping, I certainly believe that we can do more, especially here at home,” said President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. as he addressed major stakeholders in the Philippine Maritime Industry Summit 2023 at The Manila Hotel in the City of Manila.
The President heaped praises on Filipino seafarers’ commitment in providing quality service across the globe and considered them “the most vital ingredient” to the Philippine maritime industry’s global success.
“All we need to do now is to ensure that we harness their knowledge, make use of their experiences, and mobilize our local industries to build an even stronger domestic maritime industry for the benefit of our people,” he remarked.
In 2022 alone, the Philippines received a total of US$6.71 billion in remittances from Filipino seafarers. The country is considered as the world’s primary source of maritime manpower, constituting 25 percent of the total number of global seafarers.
Likewise, the Summit highlighted the Maritime Industry Development Plan (MIDP) 2028 — a roadmap for the integrated development of the country’s maritime industry to address sea transport requirement of the archipelago in support of President Marcos Jr.’s socioeconomic agenda.
“I recognize the Department of Transportation and the Maritime Industry Authority for spearheading this important timely event and for taking a huge leap forward in making the country’s maritime industry even more globally competitive through MIDP 2028,” the President expressed.
The MIDP covers eight ( 8 ) priority programs that focus on the enhancement of maritime transport security; promotion of environmentally sustainable maritime industry; implementation of maritime innovation and digitalization; expansion of domestic and overseas shipping industry; promotion of competitive workforce; promotion of shipbuilding and ship repair industry; and adoption of efficient maritime administration governance system.
