The Atlantic Northeast ( french : Atlantique nord-est ) is a geographic and cultural region of easterly North America bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and ( loosely ) by the Saint Lawrence River to the northwest. Though no official boundary exists, the most coarse concept includes the Maritime Provinces, southern Quebec, and the island of Newfoundland in Canada, and the New England region of the United States. Broader conceptions reach promote north into Canada, including Labrador and the Côte-Nord region of Quebec. Narrower conceptions may be limited to the coastal areas east of the appalachian Mountains. The kind of definitions can be attributed to overlapping commonalities of the region ‘s history, culture, geography, ecology, company, and other factors. According to archeologists, humans first settled in the Atlantic Northeast during the last ice age, approximately 11,000 years ago. [ 1 ] The overriding tribe in the region 11,000 years ago were the Penobscot, Miꞌkmaq, Maliseet, and Passamaquoddy, all of whom were former associated with the Wabanaki Confederacy. [ 1 ] These tribes chiefly inhabited the soon-to-be Maritime Provinces, adenine well as Vermont, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts.
