History

Naval Air Station, Iwakuni was commissioned July 8, 1940. When World War II started, the air station was used as a aim and defense base. After the end of World War II, diverse military forces from the United States, Britain, Australia, and New Zealand occupied the base, and it was designated a Royal Australian Air Force Base in 1948. The U.S. Air Force took command of the station April 1, 1952. The U.S. Navy took over the station on October 1, 1954. NAS Iwakuni was greatly enlarged in July 1956 when the First Marine Aircraft Wing moved its headquarters here from Korea. The station, which is approximately 1400 acres, was officially designated as USMC Air Station Iwakuni in 1962. Its mission includes support of operations, sustenance and provide of tenant units and ships calling here. Tenant units stationed here include units of the 1st MAW and 3rd FSSG, headquartered on Okinawa, angstrom good as Fleet Air Wing 31 and other units of the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force ( JMSDF ). Base Transportation

Sponsorship
All abroad accompanied personnel and alone E6 and above will be assigned a presenter. All other personnel will be assigned a sponsor upon request. Inbound personnel will be assigned a patron through the respective Unit Sponsor Coordinator. Accompanied service members must have their area clearance done before the unit Sponsor Coordinator assigns a patron .
If you are arriving on a commercial trajectory through Narita, Osaka or Hiroshima airports, please inform your presenter so that he/she can arrange transportation system from the airport to the basis .
Temporary Quarters
Service members E-5 and below arriving under alone PCS orders, temp charge will be arranged for you at the Joint Reception Center located in building 203 until you have attended the ask briefs. E-6 and above under unaccompanied PCS orders, you or your sponsor should make arrangements with Bachelor Housing for your permanent room. All overhaul members and DoD civilians under accompanied PCS orders will check into the Temporary Lodging Facility ( TLF ) at Monzen Lodge, Building 444. You or your patron should contact TLF to make reservations vitamin a soon as possible .
Relocation Assistance
The Relocation Assistance Program ( RAP ) is a mission essential platform that supports Marines and their families during a permanent change of Station ( PCS ) move. Critical Installation Information
It is advisable that you purchase approximately 30,000 yen ( about .76 yen to the dollar ) per person before you travel to Iwakuni. This is to cover unanticipated or hand brake costs during your travel .
