The academy was founded as a naval School on Oct. 10, 1845, by George Bancroft, historian, educator, and repository of the Navy, to improve the then-unsatisfactory methods of instructing midshipmen. Candidates must be U.S. citizens who are between the ages of 17 and 22 and are unmarried.
