An IMPORTANT update on emergency medical treatment! I've had a few people point out the "No Surprises Act" which was passed this year: https://www.cms.gov/newsroom/fact-sheets/no-surprises-understand-your-rights-against-surprise-medical-bills
Now, if you have health insurance, this act will "Ban surprise bills for most emergency services, even if you get them out-of-network and without approval beforehand (prior authorization)." This is super good news, and it means that you shouldn't be afraid of calling 911 in a medical emergency—you'll still have to pay for it (like an in-network procedure), but it won't be completely out of pocket if you go to an out-of-network hospital. The act will also "Require that health care providers and facilities give you an easy-to-understand notice explaining the applicable billing protections…" and though I'm less convinced about the "easy-to-understand" aspect, at the very least it means you SHOULD be notified about this when you receive the bill!
Life is hell, but at least BDG has my hand as we walk into the void together.
Yes please socialize health care so you can add another 30 minutes to this video
I got through 15 minutes before realizing that the video was only halfway over, and that this was a 30 minute video about U.S. Health Insurance definitions.
I had to stop watching near the ten minute mark because it made me want to SCREAM. A+ great content!
this is legitimately such a helpful and important video. as someone adhd and a really hard time understanding math, this really helps me with actually understanding, retaining attention to, and remembering this kind of stuff
How to get good health care: Leave the United States
I'm gonna vote for president in two days and this cautionary tale just popped up. God, US healthcare is a mess!
just went to the hospital for surgery. wild this is who helped me understand in this whole process
This is such a great and informative video. I’ve always struggled to understand our healthcare jargon. THANK YOU!!
the amount of trauma in the comments is frightening
I still don’t understand why Americans are just ok with this. They just kind of accept having the worst and most expensive health insurance in the world and everyone is just like “yeah, no way this can be changed”. Like what? Why???? You have guns! If you’re going to use them, use them for this!
Maybe im just dumb but thats pretty similar to how it works in Switzerland.
I mean it's not as bad here because emergencies are always covered (i think) and a healthcare insurance on the 'your boring doctor has to check you first' level is the least you have to get, but the system itself is more similar than i thought.
Good thing i have enough health issues that i don't have to worry about changing to another insurance, because no other one would give me the insurance plan i already got (before i developed health issues of course) since they want to save money
can you do this for car insurance plz 😅
I watched this video as entertainment more than knowledge. Idk what that says about me as a person but good job.
this is evil im glad im not american
I very much appreciate Brian’s silver nails.
Tories in England and Conservatives in Canada are pushing for a more American system. Remember that when you're voting in those countries
To be clear, Health Insurance is not Healthcare and it's much more of a hostage situation than you'd think
Wait Kaiser? Hahahaha oh my god screw them. They try to keep so much in network that going anywhere but their hospitals and doctors is discouraged af.
Also didn't know ya lived in Seattle 💗
creating something that gave me flashbacks to the innocent days when I was being onboarded into this nightmare of a system, but had to learn all this through "fun" modules
American healthcare is disgusting. It's one of the reasons we call you stupid.
It's awfully convenient how health care doesn't cover psychological damage given that the structure of this system causes me the most psychological anguish
Imagine living in a country with a government that just allows it's citizens to be taken advantage of by big corporations, because of Healthcare
I’m so confused
Yes. It is overwhelming. Yes. This video is confusing. And no. This video is abundantly helpful. It made me sit through a video explaining American healthcare. I learned anything, which is more than I learned from school or healthcare websites or my doctors
Us health insurance is like loot box subscriptions
Us health insurance is like loot box subscriptions
How the fuck do americans stand this.
The developers really dedicated a lot of time into the worldbuilding of this dystopia. I'm beyond impressed.
American Healthcare is a disgrace to humanity.
I'd ask you to pick a genre and stick with it but you're so consistently good with whatever you decide to do that no genre can define you.
What is this? Unraveled 2.0? I'M HERE FOR IT! xD
this video both gave me a stress ulcer and helped me find a plan to (almost) cover it! thanks brian!
America is a dystopian society
This is genuinely so helpful and informative. Thank you for doing the work for us, all while making us smile.
Thanks Brian!
No wonder most US folks are f'd in the head
I had this video open on my tabs and when I opened my laptop in a library, everyone was greeted by the sound of BDG laughing maniacally.
8:30 re: 100% coinsurance being the same as no insurance, it might not be, if the 100% you're on the hook for is still a reduced amount your health insurance negotiated for (vs. the amount the provider claims to charge). then again, if you were literally uninsured and had to cover a bill yourself, it's possible you would also negotiate a different price with the provider anyway (not sure since i haven't been in that situation).
why am i watching this
I am
18. (and living with my parents)
I had to take a covid test because my university sent me an email saying that I needed to. I went to the free test center and they told me I needed to go to the hospital to take a rapid test because I had a cough at the time. After an hour of waiting I get the test which took about 10 minutes, I got the result back an hour later and it was negative. I was under a health insurance plan provided by the university. NEXT DAY I HAVE A $324 CHARGE ON MY STUDENT ACCOUNT FOR THE VISIT.
