Touch ID is not needed. Removing the port would be tragic as I plug my phone into my apple car play for music. Yes, you can do bluetooth, but it sounds noticeably crappier.
Removing the port would probably be the worst thing ever. You're telling me data transfer is intended to only happen on Mac OS computers? I don't doubt it would be more viable in the future but at the moment, for effective data transfer; bad choice.
