I do my best to teach you how to easily diagnose problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way with real repairs beyond just replacing a spark plug. These tips are for both the homeowner and shop owner.

Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like a chainsaw, weed eater, weed whacker, string trimmer, grass trimmer, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, strimmer, brush cutter, leaf blower, or four stroke, four cycle units like a lawnmower, wood splitter, lawn tractor, zero turn mower, snowblower, pressure washer, generator or a ride on mower that needs parts installed or replaced, I’m your go-to guy.

My favorite brands of spark plugs are NGK and Champion and are the ones I recommend.

Watch my Lawn Tractor engine swap video here;

John Belliveau

Just watched and I'll be doing this as well. Question, can I move my fuel filter forward and install a shut off valve where the filter is located? I can't find easy access to a shut off before the present filter location. Thanks again for another great video.

Eliminator Performance

When you get Briggs and Stratton to manufacturer something proprietary, it means people can only purchase those parts through you. The end result is price fixing. As always, people will find a work around to save money, time and frustration.

R MP

I never thought John Deere would be that stupid!

Alan Ross

What a ripoff!👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻 Thanks for your great videos!👍🏻☮✌🏻

moonobserver Gilles

why they did it ?? because of $$$$$$$$$$$$ bad capitalism indeed. what are these people thinking when coming up with changes like this?

Dan Rascal

What you corrected here was probably the dumbest "oil change" idea by Deere. These oil containing filters are not easily recycled.

three wheela

Nothing is good for the environment. Also, maybe delete the silly plastic oil drain. Pipe plugs worked fine in those for decades.

Plastic cap on the drain plug!!! Is it possible that it will come off from vibration? Get the hose that goes up vertical and clips near the top with a locking cap.

John Barnett

A very good video

ghost307

I tipped my mower to the left by placing the right-side wheels on a block and the oil in the engine was below the bottom of the drain plug hole. After I got the new pipe fitted and tightened, I put all 4 wheels flat on the ground again and drained the oil. That trick didn't work quite as well on the left side of the engine to remove the filter adapter.

Great video! First thing I did after break in was to throw that junk Sleezy EZ oil change garbage away and do what you did but I used the Briggs and Stratton 594200 Oil Drain Hose and the Briggs & Stratton 796532 Hose Connector. The flexible oil drain hose is really convenient. It’s flexible and has an easy drain cap. That EZ thing leaves dirty oil in the engine too.

Christopher Raso

That's pretty cool that they make stubs that can be inserted than to convert to a proper oil filter. Looks like the manufacturer set up would be a short engine life. Love the vid and the conversion tip. 👏👏👏✌️🙃

Freecycling

Great video. Leave it to Deere to come up with an "oil change system" that leaves half the old oil in the engine while costing 2 – 3 times as much as a full oil change!

NotALot1135

Wow, the accountants at John Deere went all out to empty customer’s wallets on this one. Hopefully, Briggs & Stratton won’t copy this bullshit.

ScoutCrafter

Outstanding tutorial as always! Thanks!

Jesse Mixon

Nice job Don, I’ve also found that you can use a super tech 3614 oil filter on it and I use the same filter on my Kohler engines – the super tech from wal-mart is 99% efficient according to the filter box. I’ve never had any problems with my engines.

Wooden Beast

Very informative

feedinc

Great tip. I don't have one of these machines, but would definitely do this modification if I did.

Bert Hongo

Excellent job!

Neil Dudley

What a great video Dony, I don't know why John Deere changed that? Probably to get you to spend more money in their stores. I will keep my 2010 John Deere running as long as I can, it has over 800 hours on it and still works quite well. Thanks for posting.

Karl Schwab

I always put oil in my new oil filters before I install them.

Mike Spain

I don't enjoy working on John Deere mowers. Their designs are somewhat difficult to work on, and parts are not cheap. That is a stupid oil filter system so Deere could make more money.

queenstown kid

great video thanks don

G Nohn

That ez change oil filter is a terrible product.

p71collector

Don: How about using your vacuum pump for oil to suck out the excess oil (though the dipstick tube) before you pull the plug on the block? Might be a less messy job.😉

Andy Becker

Just another reason NOT to buy a lower level consumer product especially from a box store. I learned a long time ago to buy AT LEAST the entry level commercial products or better. 30 years ago you could buy a basic model but not now.

Big Picture Thinking

I guess of all the things Deere could have concerned itself with, it concerned itself with one of the most straightforward maintenance items and made it more difficult and less effective. Sounds about right these days.

Len James

Amazing that so called 'engineers" would think this was a good idea.. I did this same mod on my friends John Deere. Different parts but the out come was the same. Great vid so others can see it done.

John Buschmann

What do you do with your oily or gassy rags?
Love your content and explanations.

Mike busansky

I did this conversion when I priced that filter for my first oil change. Same machine bought the JD mulching kit that didn't fit the mower deck. Disappointed in JD.

GNX157

Does that filter have an anti drain back valve in it, or is one even needed?

jonathan bosco

Thank you great video as always

Matt B

Saw one of these in the big box store today. $55 for an oversized filter and a little bit of oil.

Richard Fallstich

12 point sockets will work on square drive parts like the drain plug..

rk22cc

can you replace the plastic cap on the drain pipe?

rk22cc

excellent advice, but need to buy some odd tool sizes

GrandsonofKong

What a crazy concept..crazy and bad. Everyone, please take your used oil filters to your local Hazardous Waste Drop-Off rather than put them in your regular trash pick-up.

Stellar Productions

John Deere is a greedy corporation now. Every bad decision they make, is to get richer at the customers expense. They also fight tooth and nail against Right To Repair, everybody can see that. They screw farmers over on a daily basis, when it comes to servicing those huge agricultural farm tractors. This new marketing campaign of their's, is very similar to Briggs & Stratton's, before they declared bankruptcy. Briggs pushed this you don't have to change oil campaign, just check and add. Yeah well, anybody who has half a brain knows thats utter BS. If you don't ever change your oil, heat will continue to break down the oil until it becomes useless, and then your engine will seize up. John Deere are just a bunch of big bullies trying to become the richest company in the world, thats their bottom line, they don't care about you. Screw the customer, thats John Deere's motto. Nobody should be buying John Deere equipment in modern day.

Adna Craigo

A lot of people need to see this. Thanks for telling us about it.

Mike’s Garage

Sometimes I wonder what engineers are thinking. Thanks for the video, I’m going to write down these part numbers in case I ever run into one I want to change.

Mike Remski

This is interesting. Basically all you're doing is diluting the oil; say 4qts overall, "filter" holds 1, so everytime you change it you replace 1qt. You're not really getting rid of all the old oil.
I'd have to believe that the "new" thing has a higher profit margin at the expense of longevity.

Pdd Pup

thanks JD, looks like gimmick for sure

Andrew Stokes

I was appalled to hear that they were $40 years ago! Now they're over $80!? Great video. The conversion is cheaper than that filter!

Steam Boat Willie ⚓

Unknown Torque Specs are Ugga Dugga's. 2-3 should be sufficient ! 😁

Charles Overton

I love it.

zlatko vujevic

"They way it should be" best quote today or maybe ever.

Kjell-Richard Løvdal

Great video, but the plastic cap on the end of pipe will it hold during driving the machine

Rick Broerman

Thanks Don…. that was an awesome video 📹!!!!!

MrCuckoobox

Thanks for Sharing………WHAT A SCAM!………..Pay more and get less. Paying more for an "Oil Filled Filter" that does not fully change the oil. "PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE" or should I say "Planned Self Destruction". It is like modern automatic transmissions in cars, back in the day, a lot of ATM had drain plugs for the Torque Converters so you drain almost all the fluid. I do not know of any now and you are lucky to drain 1/2 the fluid. Also bet you saved money on the first oil change because those conversion parts, oil smaller oil and oil are probably less than the "Oil Filled Filter" at $70.
