I often repeat the question when answering the question to confirm that I heard the question correctly. If the question is a little more complex, I may try to rephrase it to something simpler first. If the questioner accepts the rephrasing, that means I understood the question enough to rephrase it and I can answer more confidently. If the questioner says that wasn’t the question, then I know I didn’t understand fully so I can ask them to elaborate or rephrase it themselves
