Do you think you could successfully fake your own death? This guy did. 62-year-old Jose Lantigua was sentenced to 14 years in prison after he tried to get a big payout from insurance companies by pretending to be dead. His furniture store was getting into debt. That’s when he told friends and colleagues he was sick and had to go to Venezuela for experimental treatment not available in the U.S. It was there that his family claimed he had died of a heart attack and was cremated. So they started filing his life insurance claims totaling $6.6 million. But the insurance companies wouldn’t pay. They didn’t think he was actually dead. For starters, the Venezuelan doctor who signed Jose’s death certificate said he never received his body. Also, the place where he was allegedly cremated was 250 miles from where he died – which is unusually far. Jose was found alive and was arrested years later by federal agents thanks to the fake passport he used to get back into the U.S. The photo on the passport featured a black man – which he is not. And the Social Security number on the passport was that of a woman born in 1917.
