Pilot Embarkation – Gangway Access – Unsafe Practice at Sea CHIRP Maritime Safety

CHIRP Maritime Safety 05 2017

The hazards of Pilot boarding

Throughout 2016, the International Maritime Pilots’ Association (IMPA) held a safety campaign focused upon the standard of pilot ladders and associated equipment. CHIRP supported this campaign and received many reports on the subject.

This first report describes issues concerning pilot access near
the non-parallel ends of a ship, and use of a retractable platform.

The second report highlights the difficult challenges facing the
Master and the pilot boat skipper during a pilot boarding operation in adverse weather. A pilot should not feel pressured to board and should abort any boarding where conditions are considered to be too hazardous.

A safe means of access – at ALL times.

We are always delighted to receive feedback from our viewers

We like to think that FEEDBACK works both ways – we tell you what our reporters send in, and you tell us more about many of the topics. Please keep both your reports and your responses coming, because both contribute to the success of Maritime FEEDBACK.

CHIRP always protects the identity of our reporters. We are a confidential programme and, as such, we only keep reporters personal details for as long as we need to keep in contact with them.

It is good to see Chirp Maritime Academy has come out the problem of
the pilots for boarding and disembarkation . Iam not a seaman but an
Interested person. To train a person to become a pilot, his education,
his local experience , etc., should be around 20 years. Such a knowledgeable person should not be buried. The system of
Pilots service to the vessel that enters in to a harbour, is very critical.
it is inhuman to deal with him in the way shown , is horrible and killing.
Certainly the system of boarding and disembarkation of pilots should
be changed.
