I phone to boring

A tablet should be 18:9 (same as 2:1) aspect ratio at full size for movie watching and 3:2 (same as 15:10) when browsing. The tri folding one could be just that.

Enji Todorohi

I would buy one

Ronsolo

Seems to me this may be the future of the S Tab Line.

JamsheedDevotee

It's about time OLED hot used to it's potential

Back in the day my friend loved to lie to me about his fathers profession, and I have this super vivid memory of him going on about his father working on "displays you can fold like newspaper" we were 6-7 at the time (around year 2000) and whenever I see stuff like this it makes me smile, it's actually becoming a reality!

Dinico Nights

You forgot the 360° folding device

What interests me most is the Flex in & out, which can fold both ways just like the earlier patent of Microsoft and shows a possibility of Duo 3's form factor.

Unfortunately, I still can't find the image of the back panel of the prototype, so I still can't imagine how the hinge will work.

morgenmicha

how cool is that?! We also had this moment with the surface neo. unfortunately it never came true. but at Samsung it will certainly become reality in a few years. I'm happy

LG's cancelled Rollable which was almost a finished product, I think was better than this.

mikldude

Clever technology, but so many fail points, why wouldn't you just buy a tablet or a laptop .

I think the sliding devices are probably 3-5 years away. That was the case when they first came out with the folding phones.

Now, along with calling the iPad, a big iPhone, we can call this device a big Z-fold. Lol. Just give them a bigger thing with the same functionality.

Dee Man

Good stuff Shane. I said it before, MS will not be able to drill home the purpose of the Duo unless they release a much larger "Neo" type device along with the successor to the original Duo aka Duo 3. This way, when people see and use the larger device, their first thought is not to categorize the device as a phone and instead, more like the productivity device, it was created to be.

After seeing that Samsung folding screen device, I'm starting to think MS could and should go that route, with the Duo 3.

I know, if it's not a dual screen, it's not a Duo. After thinking about that, I disagree with that, to a degree. If MS decides to go that route, the software should behave as if it's a dual screen. Meaning, when I open an app, it should automatically open to either side of the screen. You should still be able to utilize one side of the screen, as you normally would or open a second app that should open on the available side.

With that being said, because it would all be software based, there are settings they could add that do not make sense on the current Duo form factor.

On the current Duo, you can opt to have apps span across both screens automatically. Since the next Duo may not have two screens, having the option of assigning which side you want the app to open and even giving the option to have multiple apps, Samsung style. Despite the aspect ratio of the Duo, 8 can't imagine using or wanting to open more than two apps at a time, because the working space would just be too small for my tastes. However, many would appreciate the option.

Additionally, it will have that use of a full screen that will allow you to game, read, write or watch videos, without having to get use to the space in the middle.

I don't personally care about the space, because I rarely use any apps full screen, unless it's made to take advantage of it. Again, the ability to do so would be more appealing to the masses.

Microsoft has shown that they are capable and willing to support their devices. Now, they have to be serious about catering to the general public, if they intend to remain in the cellular device/phone market. The are things they will need to do. We have to move past the niche market, but retain the features that maintains the devices multi-task features. It still needs to remain the best device for multi-tasking, first and foremost.

These tri fold ideas may only make sense if they are thin and light enough. One reason I am reluctant on the Fold is how thick it is. Same with a couple friends

Mark Finlay

Very cool and some of them will come to a device near you. We just need the software to take advantage of these form factors.

Plethora. Ooh. Indeed.
