A recent video by popular youtuber Mrwhosetheboss showcases some of his Samsung Galaxy smartphones kept in storage have blown up batteries that have expanded and separated the back cover from the chassis.
Let’s dive in and see what’s going on and 2 things you can do just in case.
It is important to note that Samsung phones are not exploding, rather the batteries are “blowing up” as in “expanding”.
Note: Most consumers don’t store their phones so shouldn’t be concerned, but also, nobody should be fully relaxed.

The batteries of phones kept in storage, maximum of Samsung's, somehow getting hyperdischarged because of that the electrolyte is somehow reacting with something causing it to change state. The best thing to do in this case is to regularly charge and keep the battery level around 50%… If the battery is already swollen, take extreme precaution and never attempt to charge it.
I have a galaxy s10. NOT stored. It has happened twice to mine.
Do you have same issue in s21 fe plss reply
Is your own s22 ultra facing such situation, since the sample size is small.
Because they are IP rated having them sealed is more cost effective than fitting rubber sheaths at every oraphus(? Too early in the morning). Batteries can leak which is why they have expiry dates.
Yeah but these battery saving settings don't matter, the phones having battery problems now are the one which are stored or not charged every now and then
Kaid go boom😂
This is just Planned Obsolescence, to make more money for selling newer phone. Samsung always added chemical formula that destroy their battery when Samsung smartphone stored and never been used for very long time 🤔
Fast chargers will aggregate the problem as well
They need to start putting removable batteries back into phones. Especially if they're going to continue to use the current battery technology
Shouldn’t be happening at all. I still have an iPhone 1 I’ve had for years and it isn’t used anymore still intact. Tired of the excuses.
Thank You Saki! 🤓
After hearing about these reports, I checked my old s9 which has been sat in a cupboard as a backup phone for some time and sure enough the battery had fully swollen up, if anyone has an old galaxy device in storage it's worth checking for sure
Saki you have a scammer pretending to be you and telling us to message them on Telegram I tried messaging all they sent it to at least the first 10 people or so but just giving you a heads-up
At Samsung, 0% Battery literally means 0% battery. Other smartphone manufacturers, Apple, Xiaomi, Sony ectr, are doing it a little smarter. Even if the battery level is 0% on Huawei smartphones, for example, there is always so much left that you never get to the zero mark.
This means that Samsung makes its batteries cheaper this way, because the rest of the battery capacity built into other manufacturers' smartphone batteries is marginally more expensive. And regardless of the fact that Samsung had a history of battery explosions with the Note 7, and this is still the same manufacturer that makes the batteries in today's Samsung Smartphones. With that said, it means you should always leave your phones at least 30 or 50% off when you put them away after you used them for two to three years.
It's not Samsung phones. It's any phone that uses a lithium ion battery and regularly gets over charged then not used for a while or is used constantly in conditions that cause it to constantly overheat. It's happened with Motorola, Xiaomi, and Apple too, not just samsung.
what do i do if it happened to me ?
When you store your old phone in 100% of charge, the battery gets damaged and degrade by it self. This will cause swelling. This is the reason why when you buy a new phone they always come in 50% of charge. Dont ever charge your battery devices like cordless vacuum, external batteries in 100% of charge. The youtuber never mentioned they store the phone in 100% of charge. Even my friends iphone 6 swell up. People just love to attack
Just seems ironic to me that this information drops on the eve of a new iPhone. Using key words like "blowing up again" is misleading and not how you describe this issue. Not properly storing your old phones isn't an AKA for BLOWING up….
Daily driving Galaxy Note 9, and its battery is swelling, leaving a gap between back glass and frame. Have maintained a healthy charge of 20%-85%. And the situation is worrisome
When my S10e charged to 85% while Protect Battery is enabled, it says: "Charging stopped [Protect Battery] will limit the charging limit to 85%".
You are da man Saki !!! Thanks for all you do.
Cheers from Detroit 🇺🇲
Both my S8+ and S10+ had this issue. 100% a problem for me, a consumer.
I agree with you saki so there can be other factors also. He might have mishandled it and done video on it to become popular. This is my opinion. Also, I have Samsung duos smartphone, which has android 4 and almost its 10-year-old phone, and I hardly use it even now I checked it the battery is in fine shape. No bulge.
Instead of Samsung implementing life saving features, they make phones that could take your life 😂
Downloaded the app, I have a Note 9, mine showing action required Life bad, shold I be worried as it seems to still last ages and lose little charge/get hot. Cheers.
Mostly those samsung model uses Lithium-Ion battery which is highly self-discharge, meaning it is required not to be 100% empty for a long period
It is not only samsung, I have found old folding phones, laptops, and psp's around my house and job all with puffy batteries. Apple fans try desperately to say it is a samsung issue.
Note 10+ was my daily driver until the battery was a bit puffy
Any idea why..?
Very suspicious.
The problem seems more malicious, its look a lot like their actual business model is to force people to repair or change their phone just after their warranty expired.
iPhone 4s bought since launch and is perfect I’m glad I left Samsung after note 7
I have an Old note 8 that we pulled out and the battery expanded but not opened up. What do we do now?
Sir, you correctly mentioned that this issue is unlikely to affect the average user since Reviewers like yourself store cellphones away after some time and we know that wherever there is a removable battery for any device, the manufacturer always recommends to remove the battery if the device is not being used for a long time to avoid leakage or whatever (maybe this is now obsolete). But since this issue is happening with mostly Samsung phones, doesn't it mean that there is something fundamentally wrong with the batteries these guys are using ?
This year I bought the S22 Ultra and the Z Flip 4, I have planned to give the Ultra to my sister when I go back home next month but if there is a genuine possibility of such a thing happening even to this year's flagships, I will have to think twice about even keeping the two phones and not selling them off.
I checked my 80% charged & Stored in the box Note 10+ for 1.5yrs (which I save for a rainy day) and it's fine.
My very old S2's are ok as well. (Even though the batteries are removable)
I've had my S22 Ultra out the past few months in well over 100°F here in SE Texas while fishing & it's just fine.
As said, this Seems to be happening to the older devices, not worried about the phones from the Note 10+ to current date
AcuBattery helps out a LOT on my Note 10+
Charging too fast too furious 😂
Thank god not more samsung for me been 4 years with my pixel 3xl and still rocks waiting for the pixel 7 bye samsung garbage
Hmm…I've been using my s8 plus….no noticeably swelling
I'm soo happy you gave credit to Mr Who's the boss.
THE PHONE I AM USING RIGHT NOW IS EXPANDING BRUH
