This video will cover the Top 10 Tractor Tools for Storm Cleanup. We shot a video about the best tractor tools to have on hand for the aftermath of a storm: a hurricane, an ice storm, a tornado, straight line winds, however it arrives in your neck of the woods. Then before we released the video we got an ice storm hit our area and left a huge mess of downed trees and so many people without power (even still as I write this). The lesson in all of these, you have to be prepared for the worst!

man that font was super small lol
Oh no, Courtney, I was hoping it would miss you or that you would get snow instead, ugh! I hope you had minimal damage to your trees, and none of them damaged any structures! I hope the cleanup is not a lot of work for you also. We all love our tractor time, but you are a very busy fellow!
What really made it bad for us here in South Central Texas is that most of our trees still have their leaves. This increased the surface area for ice, and it was devastating. We still have trees and limbs down all over the place four weeks later. It will take a while to clean it all up.
As I told Courtney, I am thankful I bought my grapple and stump bucket from him a while back and had them available for this cleanup. My neighbors and, more importantly, my wife are very thankful. Thank you, Courtney!
Such a wonderful and informative video, as always! I loved the cinematic views of the ice and how you showed some of the unsung heroes at work, our linemen, getting the Internet and power back up for us as they always do.
You forgot the landscape rake. Never thought I would need or buy one but live in a large farm community where we can have overland flooding which we had 3 years ago. Water rises & recedes with little current & we had small twigs, corn storks & especially corn cobs EVERY WHERE. NEVER could of cleaned up without, since then I’ve found many uses for it. GB
I have hundreds of trees that had hangers in them. Where I had to rent a man left to get them all cleaned up. It was around 350 to 400 man hours. Wore out bars on my Stihl and Craftsman chainsaws. Those trees took about fifteen years to fill out again. Hate ice storms.
Sorry this happened to y’all. Yes indeed a tractor with correct attachment is very helpful
We had a catastrophic Ice storm in February 2021. We went 13 days on generator power. Our 80 acres had over 1000 fallen or broken trees scattered about. I am still cleaning up the aftermath 2 years later.
When material collector was that shown in the video?
Living in Central NC we seems like we get a minor ice storm, 1/4" of ice from freezing rain every year or 2 and a major 1/2" of ice every 5 to 10 yrs. I had a pine tree leaning over the corner of our house taken down earlier this year as a precaution incase we had ice. Used pallet forks to move the trunk and branches and my landscape rake adjusted to least aggressive to rake the pine debris from the yard and push off into the woods. Saved a lot of back breaking work.
You're right on. June 14th here in Ohio we were in the middle of a straight line wind in excess of 100 mph wind. What a mess we live in a woods and lost a lot of trees. I never saw anything like it and I hope never again. I guarantee you I have a grapple now for my sub compact tractor.
Great stuff……..off track, but what brand jacket is that you are wearing
An important tool for the 3pt when you have your grapple on, you can't use it to scrape/push debris from trees off your driveway or road so a rear blade or a boxblade (make sure it's set level) will make quick work of the small debris or leftovers that the grapple missed
Lineman here. Chain saw and grapple on my tractor will clean up just bought anything
Been thru that a couple times here in South Central NY. Ended up cutting the tops off my Birch Trees, since the were bent over to the ground. It's amazing how some trees will perk back up after. The Spruce, Firs and Pines should bounce back well. Lot depends on how long they stay in the bent position with the ice on them. Hopefully mostly just trees damaged and not too many of the homes where the tree fell on them.
Freezing rain/ice storms are just a mess, and dangerous too… prayers to that Paw Paw Firefighters family. The attachments mentioned are very helpful indeed! I'd add a good mindset of patients and safety when working those conditions… good video!
Chains, a cant hook, and a boom pole come in handy moving downed trees. I have a log dolly made out of an old trailer axle, a few 4x4s, pivoting chain hooks, and a folding/removable tow bar so it can be pulled behind a tractor or ATV. With one end of a log chained to that and the other attached to the boom pole we haven't had a tree yet that we couldn't move with ease. And since it keeps it off the ground you don't have to worry about rocks/dirt damaging chainsaw and sawmill blades, or digging ruts, and the weight making a tractor unstable because it still gets transferred to the ground directly instead of through the 3PH or FEL.
The one thing is it's beautiful as much as it is destructive 👍🚜😎
I remember the storm of 1978-79. I was 13 years old in a small town in North East Texas. We lost power for nine days. Luckily, we had gas heat but my dad used a car battery and wired tail light bulbs throughout the house and we used a propane camp stove to cook with. It's actually a good memory because it brought our family closer. A good chainsaw and three strong boys and a Ford 8 n was all we needed to clean up after that ice storm. It's the only winter in Texas in my 58 years that we could actually walk across our farm pond but I only weighed about 110 pounds.
This is why maintaining your wooded property is so important. Tree climbers like various vines, poison oak/ivy adds weight to trees and left unchecked will eventually topple a tree. An ice storm can easily add enough weight to wipe out a vine laden tree that would have otherwise been ok.
The once in a decade ice storms here in N. Fla. have the same results.
Chainsaw, grapple and a fire.
You might want to make that intro writing a little bigger.. it was hard to read even after I turned my phone to landscape. It might have been big enough on the edit screen, but not on a phone.
must be from south west Michigan. We're just north of Grand Rapids and we got hit hard with the ice last night. What a mess! sure wish I had my tractor and grapple right now, hopefully soon. Either way always cool to find someone else from Michigan
Here in Connecticut we typically have one of those ice storms each season. We had our first snow storm of the season (!) last night – all of five inches.
If your skies clear, get out tonight and get some video or stills of the moonlight shining thru the ice. Very artistic!
As an arborist, I have a piece of advice for storm prep/downed trees clean up. Own a quality chainsaw, and two (2) CARBIDE chains. Urban trees (trees in, or immediately adjacent to your property) are often riddled with nails, wire, bits of fence, and even bullets. Any of those will trash a normal chain, but the carbide will eat the trash and keep going. Always wear your eye protection, especially with carbide chains, as they can throw a carbide, and with enough energy to pop your eyeball.
Mother nature can be devastating yet beautiful at the same time
