The drill started on February 20 and was held in two phases, namely port and sea. It was aimed at promoting defense and security cooperation among the BRICS members, an emerging-market organization, and enhancing the capacity of the participating parties in jointly safeguarding maritime security. In the three-day sea phase, warships from the three countries conducted various exercises in waters near Richards Bay of South Africa, including anchorage ground defense, mine elimination, anti-piracy and air defense.
