I’ve been saying this for years. Who decided teeth aren’t part of the human body.

Quinn O'Shaughnessy

i miss the Egg Man. he's not called in for a while. : (

Roger McMillan

We got free dental in my province now just added to our healthcare. I got all my old filling replaced free (sixteen!)..then they saved a tooth that was chipped..then another that was falling out…the front one so THANK GOD for this new system or I'd have one front-tooth missing.

Oak River

Because they can make more money separating them.

Capitalism

Donna Alexander

And eye/vision

Carolyn Chociej

It’s made me angry for years, the expense, my poor mom in her 70’s paying thousands for her teeth,

Brian Korth

I was born with a defect in my tooth enamel. They stained and chipped easily and were prone to cavities. I’ve paid $25,000 of $40,000 to get them crowned, all out of pocket.

James Eves

It's a somewhat similar situation with eye/vision care. Things like injury/infection/disease related to your eyes might be covered, but basic vision exams and glasses are commonly not. Which is completely insane when you consider that 75% of the US population needs corrective lenses.

For example, Medicare offers absolutely zero coverage for an exam or corrective lenses. It's a completely out of pocket expense if you don't have additional vision insurance. If you're using a Part C/"Advantage" plan, that will often have a bundled basic vision plan to cover the exam (with a $30-50 co-pay), plus some allowance to help pay for frames/lenses/contacts.

In my state, Medicaid does cover glasses with some restrictions. You are stuck with a limited selection of approved frames, with only basic lenses, that will be fully covered. Getting any sort of enhanced/upgraded lenses, anti-glare coatings, no-line bi/tri-focals, etc means you must pay out pocket for the entire thing. There is no option to the pay the difference for the upgrades, or any discounts offered.

Everyone else not eligible for those government healthcare systems is stuck with only having private vision plans. And from what I've seen of those, it amounts to getting a bit of a discount on glasses if you get new ones every single year. If you're not needing new glasses every year, it's just throwing away $200-350 in premiums that could be spent on higher end frames or lenses every couple years.

David, why are leaves green and smell weird after the rain???

Scott DeGasperis

And don't get me started about eyeglasses and hearing aids! WTF! My eyes have a biological defect that needs to be corrected with glasses. It is no different than diagnosing high cholesterol and prescribing medication to correct the problem. .

Ben Sonic

It's a conspiracy by the Jewish dentists.

Because those that make decisions for the entire country are clueless about what lower and middle class people are facing on a day-to-day basis. The saddest part of this is they don’t care to know. This country will never progress regardless of what political party has control. It’s time to explore repatriating to a country where social justice is the order of the day.

That caller was so sweet..I just want to hug her

I love sammy!

I have a similar problem…I’m a veteran and get healthcare through the VA (it’s funny too that several of my fellow veterans claim to hate socialism , yet benefit from it lol)

Only veterans who are considered 100 percent disabled, get dental coverage…I don’t qualify so I have to pay out of pocket….the costs just for one root canal and crown is absurd and many dental plans will only cover a small portion or none at all

Jami StarDust

It's the same with the VA. I get my healthcare through the VA and it doesn't cover dental. I never had wisdom teeth, so I had 4 molars on each jaw. now I have one on the bottom, and I'm missing my incisors which means I have 8 bottom teeth and I'm missing a pre molar on top. It's difficult to eat hard food. So raw vegetables like carrots, celery, broccoli, turnips, cabbage, and cauliflower I need to cook. So it most definitely affects you're health.

James Smith

This is the kind of crap that not having Universal healthcare causes. We, here in the good ol" U. S of A. are at the mercy of insurance companies in every aspect of our lives. Money is what it is all about, your health can go straight to hell. Insurance bleeds us blind, then lawyers step in to litigate against the Ins. companies, add infinitum. Not just in health (but arguably most important), but in most aspects of our lives. At the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist, we are controlled by and through litigation. We are the most law suit centered nation on earth. As long as the lawyers and insurance companies control our lives, we will continue to be victimized in our own country.

temushin

I have the same attitude for health insurance. I'm 41, I've had 3 cavities in the last 20 years, and I get a checkup/cleaning every 5 years or so… why the hell would I pay for health insurance that doesn't even pay for major issues?

William McAdoo

Good question

Old Dude

Its another way so they can steal more money

Tom Robb

This business of dentistry almost never being included in universal health care is a mystery. Oral hygiene is essential to overall good health but here in Australia it is not included in our Gov health care

James Rogers

My teeth went to shit after cancer treatments. The direct cause of tooth death was due to these treatments, but it was never covered under my health insurance. I spent over $50,000 in 3 years to dentists only to be in constant pain. I Finally found a great dentist that agreed with me in getting rid of them and going to full dentures. I had 17 teeth left, 5 were bad, and it cost me $5,000 to have them removed by an Oral Surgeon, and my first set of dentures. Dentists are incentivized to keep you coming back so they always want you to "save your teeth" even when it's not in your best interest.

white_supremacist_jesus

yeah i had an abscess once and it was hurting like hell so i went to the hospital ( mind you im in canada so i do fear being ruined for going to a hospital) they told me i had to go see a dentist and that they only do mouth stuff when they get referral, i was pissed off, told them im hurting now and waiting for a dentist to be available was beyond stupid, they gave me morphine and antibiotics, as a last screw you to u.s.a : i didn't pay for the medicine either lolololol, losers.

Serai3

Also, FYI: Many dentists run a scam that says you have to pay NOW and then you can get your money BACK from the insurance. THIS IS A SCAM. It is completely untrue, but they do it because most people just go along with it. If you don't have the money to pay ahead, tell your dentists that you want the treatment ON APPROVAL. That means the dentist has to contact the insurance company and ask them to approve the payment BEFORE he does the procedure. They'll either approve it or not, just like with any other insurance, but you DO NOT HAVE TO PAY a penny ahead of being reimbursed. (The agent who gave me this information actually laughed at the dentist who tried it!)

Serai3

This is getting ridiculous. People can DIE from dental problems. Infections can migrate and affect the heart. It's insane that insurance companies are allowed to do this. Even worse, dental insurance is based on numbers from DECADES ago, which is why they cover so little even when they do their job. But insurance companies can't be sued, and Congress is loath to regulate it in any way because of lobbyists and all the perks they give out.

JM1993951

Same reason a two minute tooth extraction cost me $280 and the vet charged $50 to “shave” my cat’s stomach when she had just been shaved two days prior for another appointment. They do it because they can.

mybrotherjames

Fun thing about insurance, to insure myself and my 3 kids cost x amount with my corporate insurance. I add my wife and it doubled the cost. Same with my wife’s insurance. We could double our kids and independently have separate policies for the same cost as 1 of us insuring the entire fam. Sounds like a scam because modern insurance is a scam.

Your Seat At The Table

Most people who live in that under 75k category in America have bad teeth and will loose most of them over their life time. When it's cheaper to pull a tooth then fix it, that is the usual recourse for many of us.

bill pitz

Oral health can affect your whole body

Nanner

My 21yr old needs jaw surgery. Part of this is having to have braces for about 2 years. Year before breaking and moving the jaw and a year(ish) after. We were working on this prior to age 18 when dental approved but medical was a hold out (dentist said it's usually the opposite) Since it was not affordable out of pocket we waited a bit, covid hit, and then he got too old for any kind of braces to be covered. I don't understand how even the braces would not be considered medical in cases like this! (He has a weird jaw thing where it's not only wrecking all his back teeth but if he tries, for example, to take a bite of a sandwich he has to use side teeth. It's also very painful a lot of the time) It's more complicated than that (WAY more than say an overbite as he looks "normal" Would not be considered cosmetic)

pfrydog

The cost of health insurance has turned into a sick joke.

Shartazo Khan

I've got an easier answer.
It makes too much sense!

Paweł Ciepliński

🤦‍♂️ US of A…
So… you have separate orthopedic insurance? Each limb separately? You pay both kidneys' insurance you get the liver half price⁉️

Lewis Freeman

Healthcare in the US is broken in so many ways

James Clark

I totally agree.

we are told that your oral health is the best indicator of your overall health but it isn't included in insurance…that dog don't hunt.

my guess is that insurance sees dental care as cosmetic preventive care

Aaron Lawrence

Insurance is like this for other things as well — mental health, ocular health, auditory health, dental health, etc. Because, as we all know, eyes, ears, mouth, and brains are just optional add-ons that a person doesn't need to live a full and happy life.

I had insurance from a former employer and had to choose between dental and vision coverage.

Eek the Cat

That is… A really good question I wasn't asking…

Denize

Haven’t see the video yet but I bet it’s because they can.

ThaNarc

I remeber 10 years ago while i was in hs ,frontline did a show on the dental industry. You would be shocked on how fucked up the entire industry. They were doing intrusive procedures on black kids and then overcharging there parents. I was greatful for having a private dentist that actually gave a shit.

Rich Marceau

Vision coverage is sometimes treated that was too?

Classy Ann Sassy

The dental organization is it's own entity ..lobbyists have made it impossible to stay seperate..also Denists feel they should be paid as surgeons salaries and there is really no way to fight that organization…it's terrible and out of control prices, then they make you feel like it's "you" don't care about your teeth .. I have had friends. Go to Mexico…no problem as of yet they say but why should that be the alternative ?
