Could you imagine ordering a fish taco and receiving a beaver laden tortilla? Of course not, because beavers aren’t fish. Or are they?

Solution : Treat 'fish' as a description of shape and locamotion, not lineage, much like we use the term 'worm'.

Jakob Raahauge

aww! Hank is such a delightfully wholesome guy!

Josh Siebenthall

Fish are a psyop /s

Bipolar Mind Droppings

Cladistically, yes. You are always a member of every preceeding group on your evolutionary branch.

We evolved from something that was once a "fish" (there's no such thing as a fish in cladistic terms) and are thus still technically fish, just as birds are technically dinosaurs.

SlyPearTree

Does that mean that McDonald will start selling McHumans for the Catholic market?
/not putting down Catholics, I was Catholic and I think my dad still is, not sure about the rest of the family as we never discuss religion.

Radosław Orman

I'm 90% sure story was about capybaras and friday's in argentinian prerie- there's nothing elese to eat there

Tryin toohard

I knew before I even clicked on this video that I would question if we are fish

Jambi

Grades vs clades. Fish are a grade of evolution, as are dinosaurs, invertebrates, green algae, protists, archaea, and procaryotes. They are defined by ancestral characters, which are not useful for defining monophyletic groups. But, grades are useful for telling the evolutionary story.

If it’s sort of okay to eat beavers for lent, wouldn’t it also be sort of okay to eat humans for lent? Good to know.

Murderous Rage

You can still assign a meaningful definition to the word "fish", just not as an evolutionary group by using the first method suggested where you carve out anything not "fishy" – eg. the tetrapods. Sort of like how we classify possums: Australian possums are more closely related to kangaroos than opossums, but the similarities in taxonomy, structure and behaviour make the distinction (while not evolutionarily correct) still practical

Botany is the science of studying plants (like plant biology). Vegetables don't exist in Botany-that's a culinary term, usually describing how we regard a plant based on it's flavor. You can be discussing the exact same plant and it'll be one thing in the kitchen and something else entirely in the lab.

crazycatlady39

0:38 Some fish breathe air. Labyrinth fish.

Elizabeth McGlothlin

Geese, too.

Harrison Bennett

"John, we are all fish people."

Conrad Francis

Got me with the Bea-very cool hahah

Pete

I thought this was gonna be a different kind of video, based on the title

I could go on for hours about this concerning humans and others possibly from another planet we had to leave for any numbers of reasons and yes including human caused climate changes but water is not only one of the essential necessities for life it is also a way to mimic the effects of gravity on our bodies by aiding in artificial forces down which without we could also die or become deformed if no solution had been found , besides being the way to supply our bodies with oxygen through manipulation . Also many of the ancient mega structures were made so precise it would provide an environment which could be both water and airtight to the extent we would have airpockets like holding a bowl upside down underwater or some underwater vehicles and one of the most important attributes is how water is used to control the effects of radiation like is plenty in space similar to how it’s used in nuclear reactors . I know sounds crazy but it’s also crazy how some ancient pyramid structures have niches where one in South America or China fits perfectly into one in America or New Zealand and so on. Yeah we may have had to live in water and if it’s during many galactic billion millennium space travel until we found a suitable planet for life again be prepared because the way we are headed we may have to plunge beneath the waves again or expire . No wonder there’s heavy water in the deepest parts of our oceans eh?

Jcknight7996

Goddamn the puns

GreenSteve

NO SUCH THING AS FISH

Lapis Lazarus

I have a few thoughts about eating beaver…
Yes, I'm a fortysomething woman with the mind of a middle school boy! 😆
You can eat my beaver anytime, for Lent, it's kosher, it's safe for anyone with nut allergies (no nuts here, HAHAHA!!!) good grief, will someone take this phone away from me?!? I'm not suitable for public interaction… This is why no one takes me anywhere 🤣🤣🤣

Gregory Vasilyev

Nah, we are all just a bunch of opisthokonts swimming around happily as a single cell with a flagella.
Granted, parts of us have some pretty weird life stages here and there, but they're basically weird looking clonal colonies

E Cole

I simple man.
I see Hankfish, I click.

C

I'm glad that I can still eat humans during lent.

SaruCharmed

We are fish in the same way birds are reptiles.

Daniel Webb

So superior fish beings are really just humans

DNS

Freaky fishy fishy I'm so freaky fishy fishy~

hydrolito

Beavers are not fish they have no gills, scales, and fins.

hydrolito

Out of all the fish why a gold fish shirt for Aquaman?

hydrolito

Fish have gills, scales, fins none of which are a part of me so no.

Jared LoGerfo

* holds up sardine can*
“Behold! Hank Greens Man!”

llemondropss

Thanks!

ImBoredToo

Reminds me of CA arguing Bees are "fish" according to how the law was written for species protection.

Anne O'Nymous

Do we have gills? No. Do we have fins? No. Can we live underwater, without a breathing apparatus, for more than a minute or two? No. Then obviously we are not fish. So the title of this video is just plain STUPID. This is why I don't bother watching your channel very often. For what I assume is meant to be an educational channel, you all don't seem very well educated, judging by your video titles.

Rachel Wickart

Are the classification systems (cladistics vs Linnaean) incompatible? I would think both are useful, since they use different methodologies.

Azanocegrog

So dolphins are fish after all

Daniel Lobo

If a beaver is fish, then we're all worms

J W

Beavers are just cats with big lips. It's a very laborious subject I know, but each cat has its own unique lips. Some are lighter, darker, some are tucked, others hang…it's science.

Chris Forsyth

So the takeaway is that Hank says it's okay to eat people during lent.

Amarzz Aelin

Dislike due to zoo.
