SUB ZERO FISHING CHALLENGE WITH 100 YEAR OLD REEL

Join Graeme for a sub zero fishing session using a 100 year old reel. He is now back in front of the log burner, but GP pushed his circulation to the limit in an effort to see if he could take on the challenge the viewers had asked him when they spotted one of his vintage reels in a previous episode. He makes an attempt at servicing the reel but secretly hasn’t a clue! Then he is off to a Southern river in temperatures that were -5 degrees, enough to freeze the appendages off a brass monkey, freeze the line in the rod rings and freeze his feet to the river bank…but he finally gets success using a 40-year old float and some maggots on the hook…then he goes out again to a tiny creek that is not frozen and tries for another species. This time it is so cold the maggots freeze in the container !!…but he soldiers on,in true Awesome Army style…Its a movie length film,so sit back and watch a man using a 100 year old fishing reel…and surviving !!…..Its quite entertaining !!

Your perseverance paid off…well done. I've never caught a grayling…few a far between here in Kent. Hoping to have a go on the Itchen or test in the new year 🤞

Chris Pickering

Neil Smith

Great video Graham. Some lovely fish there in freezing conditions. 🥶

Anthony Colbourne

24:13 Graham you never cease to amaze me! Suffering so much for our entertainment. And..What a fish! That reel works well for it's age too. Love to see quirky bits like this to add some twist to the show. 46:57 Oh Graham you make me laugh… Reel review of the day right there!

rob fraser

how much was the reel when you bought it new graham ,,🤒

barbara neville

Graeme goes really old Skool like Isaac Walton with horse hair and bent pins 🙂

Paul Hopwood

My daughter bought me some Arctic Sport boots from The Original Muck Boot company. I used them on the beach in 13 degrees this week and rather than having cold feet in my usual wellies, my feet stayed really warm. That was without much pacing around, because the fishing was quiet. Highly recommend them in cold weather Graeme.

Borderlands

It shows that pleasure and effectiveness of fishing has very little to do with the tackle used. That said, it's nice that you use ancient tackle so we don't have to!

Sean Campbell

Lovely fishing

Robertcotton

Thanks so much for sharing Mate 🙂 I really enjoyed watching as always !
Keep warm and merry Christmas and a great 2023.
Cheers ,
Rob.

Hey Graeme. Have you ever tried fishing with surgical gloves on? I know of a few people with circulation problems here in Minnesota that use them regularly when bare hands are needed for hunting and fishing and they agree it helps keep the damp cold from sucking the warmth out of skin.

Matt Sanders

Hi G. Simple charcoal pocket warmer would tea help. Like having a little furnace in a pocket to take the absolute chill away. Christmas is coming so maybe Mike can sort it out.

Graham Blackwell

I think we all appreciate the sacrifice you make for our enjoyment 🥶

Mark Elliott

Good effort. Hard enough fishing in that weather, let alone with an ancient reel 🥶🎣❤️

ian hall

Excellent video Graham, your a real trooper for the fishing , very interesting and much appreciated you using that valuable reel for us and sharing it much appreciated.

Jon Drake

And by the way, invest in a pair of MUCK boots and feet stay toastie

Jon Drake

Graham, I'm a diabetics and suffer terribly in the cold, in fact my fingers turn blue, very painful. I take a coleman northstar lamp with me, it works wonders for installing heat into very cold and painful fingers.

David Kelly

You needed some of those hand warmer packages. That trout was beautiful.

Another great video 👍🎣🐟🍺👍

Richard Gould

Well done Graham, great video.

Richard Gould

Well done Graham, you brave sole,

Fascinating reel and must of been quite inovative at the time.

Arron Connah

I love winter fishing but I suffer from Reynard's disease which does not help with my fishing but needs must, are you doing any pike fishing this winter

Dave Young

I had someone here tell me that same thing, that the old timers a long time ago used to keep their bait in their mouths to keep it from freezing up, but he was talking about them keeping the red worms and night crawlers in their mouth, NOPE, not me, no way!! Oh, those were the old timers up in the Northern states doing that did that, ice fishing on really cold days!

Jane Durston

Well done Graeme that looked like hard work but you did it very interesting smashing fishing thank you for all your efforts kind regards Mr D Hey Merry Christmas

Jeffrey Brandes

Cracking session, Graeme. Early Christmas present.

Merry Christmas 🤶 🎄 to you and family. And a happy new year.

Not just a vintage reel, but vintage TA Fishing. When I first started following you all those years ago, it was these types of videos I loved the most. From the bottom of my heart, thankyou. You’ve saved me from boredom, sadness and malaise many a Friday night!

Dadas Trading Room

Once upon a time, it was during the early capitalism in Poland, the 90's, I was at lake. All I had is some filoselle (embroidery) and a pin (the needle type pin). So I found a stick, tied the filoselle to it, bent the pin into a hook, tied it to the end of the filoselle. I don't remember what I used for bait, but it must have been something I could find, like earthworms.
I caught quite a few fish, roach mostly, but we still had a nice meal…

This hoar frost – it's normal where I live – have nice pics, too.

Carl Trollope

Thanks Graeme for going out in the freezing cold for us. Great fish. stick and bent pin and just line next 🙂

Hensley’s Hobbies - Doug

Excellent Graeme! Hope your hands recovered, I know all about numb hands and that, I can't stand whenever one or the other goes numb and I don't have to get cold for them to do that. Anyhow, good show mate, I wish you and yours a very Happy Christmas ⛄🎄🧑‍🎄☮️, I remember a long long time ago I was with a buddy in his boat at Dale Hollow lake fishing for smallmouth bass, in early February and it was snowing, freezing cold and the eyes of the rod's would ice up and the only way to get it off the eyes was to dunk the rod into the water, all the way to the handle just about but that would work for a little while and then we'd have to do it again. We were casting lures for the smallmouth bass, the only reason we were down there then was because that was supposedly the best time of year to have your best chance at the big smallies. He did catch about a 6 and a half pound one that day. I caught several in the 4 lb range.

Lil’ Pipskweek

The Alvey Sidecaster now I remember. The reel swivelled so that the line came off as in a fixed spool but winding it in was much faster than a fixed spool if I recall.
