Britain is currently in the process of reviewing and deleting EU laws that were copy and pasted over into British legislation. That might sound reasonable, but there are tens of thousands of laws to look through, and they’ve given themselves a dangerously tight deadline…

📼 Confused why we're talking about this today and not the budget? Well we already did… https://youtu.be/FTKujdZGHX8

👆 You can watch the budget breakdown as part of yesterday's TLDR Daily Briefing, as well as learning about 3 other huge news stories from around the world

The nationalist conservatives are a joke. I thought British were more intelligent as to be fooled by a few demagogic nationalistic statements.

Adam Frankenberg

Even if you're a foaming at the mouth anti-EU nutter with deep-set madman's eyes (who has for some unaccountable reason decided to style your hair after Hitler-Hi Jacob we'll all chip in for you to get a new hair hair do). You can't possibly think that this is a good idea. Leave the UK bereft of so many laws for any length of time and just out of spite and irrantional hatred I mean come on!

There is a technique in programming called "obfuscation". It is used when you need to hide something or make accessing it so hard that it's not worth it, and it is done by making the file it is in as unreadable and filled with other junk as possible. This is exactly what's happening here. This is what the entire Brexit was about. There is something (or multiple somethings) in those laws that somebody really wants to repeal, but can't do so publicly, which is why they are doing this nonsensical bill. It will be something that would be unpopular even with Conservative voters. Probably something around labor laws, NHS privatisation and/or financial system regulations. Anybody who votes for the Conservative party at this point is an idiot.

Britain, much like russia…. Tick tock, tick tock.

Journeytoalex

Since new laws don’t abide by retained EU law I don’t see the point of abolishing retained EU law. What benefits would scrapping retained EU law bring? The downsides are pretty evident. To me it seems rather like another populist and costly move.

Mr. Afrikaans

The fact there are thousands of laws in the first place says it all.

The main reason why the UK economy is probably falling is because the government isn't doing anything, if anything, they're actively ruining the economy via stupid policies. Quite literally the most they've done I think is give tax cuts to big businesses, who don't need it, so y'know smaller businesses are the ones who are struggling yet they favour the larger ones who just go to other sources regardless. Oh and not to even mention that ship deal which, yes would've cost money, it would of definitely provided much needed jobs and boost the ship building industry, providing something for people to invest into, overall boosting the economy but nah apparently getting some "world renowned" ship builders instead of your local ship dockyard is more important, of course they did give the much larger contract to a British business but showing all your investment into it would show that your dedicated and provide a sense of stability.

Anyway if the Tories ever wish to win an election for the next thirty years? (Unless Labour somehow buggers up) They're going to have to call for a general election, if they don't? Well… With Sunak who thinks we're in the Victorian era I doubt they'll be that popular

Personally I knew Brexit would lead a decline in the UK economy?? Yeah? Everyone with a brain knew it would decline? When people voted for Brexit they went in there with the understanding it would decline the economy. Yet we voted for it as we imagined the government would manage to cushion this at the very least, y'know improve trade with other nations and not just… America… and maybe be competent enough to notice COVID equals BAD and just cut the borders off immediately. Yet sadly being competent isn't an attractive trait anymore. So looks like we'll have to bare the storm

Sunak eye on job..
EU OUT OF NORTHERN IRELAND NOW.. It does not matter what Biden says trump loves UK ni as one kingdom anyway..

Celeste Celeste

Good Luck GB. You're gonna need it.

The Welsh Assembly? It's the Welsh Parliament now 🙂

"Take back control" for politicians, not citizens.

Patrick Powers

It is most certainly an EXCELLENT idea. So much of EU regulations are both antidemocratic and undemocratic. All issues that still need regulation will simply be corrected and installed.

Samo Muránsky

This is nothing but a virtue signalling tbh. Parliament already has the power to repeal any EU law, so if there's anything problematic that UK wants to change, they are free to do so. The proposed law simply doesn't make any sense.

Who knew that CTRL C + CTRL V matter to so many people

Brynjard Øvergård

is it just me, or is the picture out of sync with the audio?

Mathieu Van de Sompel

Seems like the UK is moving towards an authoritarian regime faster and faster. This bill is truly a scary precedent.

Westminster government = irresponsibility + stupidity+ malevolence

SparkysBarelyMusic

Business department, needs 370 staff to decide on 318 eu rules and it will take a year…

So someone will sit down and go; hmm should office space be measured in meters or feet? I'll have an answer in one year.

I get some of them will be harder than that but just under one year per rule per person, jesus.

Covfefe

Back to Magna Carta.

σπύρος spiros

So this is what they meant “gaining back sovereignty”.

Elvis Crypto

No-one can understand this mess, as evidenced by the fact that the lawmakers don't even know about thousands of laws that exist. The system should be rebooted from first principles.

Gwenwyn Marwol

Senedd is the welsh world for parliament. Try not to be English and pronounce it correctly instead.

Seawind

They can go back to using Imperial instead of Metric while they're at it.

Chad Rusch

At least try not to so bias n a shill for the left.

Michael Garry

This is the Steve Bannon approach – burn it all down. If Rees-Mogg is involved, its a bad thing. The UK needs rid of these charalatons and traitors….

NZ

A lawless UK will be a fair game for shady businesses and corrupt politicians.

Jeffrey Umeh

Seems like it would just be easier to leave the laws on the books and where you want to make changes make new laws, am I crazy here?

World Peace

The UK government seems to be great at having bad ideas.

darin earwicker

If you burn your bridges it makes it harder to come back. Sounds like the Tory's.

Brexit was a terrible mistake but it seems the UK is trying to make it worse

But the High Chancellor has spoken!

Jay Thoden van Velzen

seems like more performative politics instead of any attempt at governing
