The Ute was invented by Australia, in the 1930s. The designer was the grandfather (or great uncle?) of federal Greens MP Adam Bandt. It was a result of a farmer's wife writing to Ford Australia (HQ in Geelong), complaining that there was no vehicle able to take their produce to market during the week, and the family to church on Sunday. The result was the car with a tray – not a truck, not a pick-up, and uniquely Australian until the yanks and the Liberal government killed the Australian car industry a few years ago.

Sam wish you family luck try do my part watch all ads plus always thumb up take care your self your family needed you

RWBHere

'Utility Truck' became 'UT', which became 'Ute', so it's a perfectly good name for the vehicles.

sam thai

Chinese anything is pure trash! Their low quality products are not just reality, its legendary!

Peter Inns

The "Ute" (abbreviation for utility vehicle) was requested by an aussie farmer's wife. Quote:
'…it was a letter from the wife of a Gippsland farmer to Ford Australia's former CEO, Hubert French, in which she questioned why Ford didn't provide its customers with a vehicle that could be used both for religious purposes and to transport pigs to the market."

Ford Geelong took the idea on board and developed the ute we know and love. The idea went to the US and took off there as well. The design was by Lew Bandt. These days, only Tesla could be flexible enough to react to a the wife of a farmer's request. Things were different in 1933.

30 years ago when was traveling around New Zealand I was invited inside a home for a tea and a biscuit. I will never forget 👍

laeneel

Radar RD6 is definately on my wishlist…I think it will do great in Australia if they get the pricepoint right.

Nick Borrego

Thank you. Ute is dumb. It's dumb.

Tom Drewenskus

Australia isn't getting American pickups because Ford & Rivian have not figured out how to make them in large quantities. Prototypes are easy, production is hard. The Silverado and RAM pickups are still vaporware, and production will take several years. Even the Tesla Cybertruck with 1.7M pre-orders in America will not be exported to Australia anytime soon. So, your best chance is to buy a BYD or Geely pickup.

Marvin F

EVs are the future, forget about ICE vehicles, they are a goner! Countries that does not comply to lower fossil fuel consumption caps will be penalised with higher tariffs for their exports.

St Gray

On the plus side, it looks like you shirts are starting to fit better. 😄
Look after yourself though.

Michael Danaher

Hey Sam,
Pretty sure the Ute was first invented in Australia at Fords Geelong plant😉

gzcwnk

NZ loves EVs partially because of the discount, but change of govn probable in Oct 🙁 means it goes.

Michael Helmreich

Ute was invented by an Australian woman.
Ute is short for Utility vehicle.
Tut tut Sam 😉

lum tavon

Truly hope the BYD and geely Ute's will break through asap. Will make pollution levels go down much more as with passenger cars.

Donald McClellan

Yesterday Akio Toyoda, announced on the Velocity channel an Electric Hilux truck. I was not capable of watching it all. It is an ugly thing and I can't give you speck's.

Brendan Kenny

Hey Sam ask the Oz BYD rip orf dealer how much are they going to charge us for "service" and will the warranty need a university degree to understand???

Kenneth Moerscher

Love seeing you full of energy again. Good perspective in the video concerning supply and demand related to cost of battery production.

qilu2004

pickups have no market in china, for some reason. people simply don't haul a lot of stuff for daily life. that is why chinese ev makers aren't keen on making them. i don't quite get the love for pickups either. they are not gas/energy efficient, are they?

Pifu

welcome back Sam

Robert Nicholson

Great video as usual. I suspect almost all of your followers are like myself and will patiently wait for you if you need time off for your family. You won't lose us Sam.

Nathan

Thx for the praises of NZ!
My next thought :
If Toyota (God bless them) could be cunning enough to bring out an EV Hilux Ute, even with limited range, will get to town and back.
Beat the dreaded NZ ute tax.
Obvious gap in the market here, Toyota could save their skins if they act

Qi Trin

Bro – first vehicle with sodium-ion will be the Seagull.

alf

Sam, donated to you guys today and sending lots of ❤️ from the UK mate!

Mark Rowland

Don't tell the truth about New Zealand. Half the visitors will want to move there. That's putting up house prices.

Ross Venner

I don't want a dual cab. The tray is impractically short. When will we get a proper two door tray top?

Trevor Evans

As Sam’s parents we are stunned and so grateful for the generosity of so many good people who have had such a huge impact for Sam, Shanna, Jack and Cal in a time of distress. Thank you all so much.

Very pleased that BYD are building an electric ute. If I can’t have a Rivian then perhaps it will be a BYD ‘pickup’. Won’t be able to give up my Amarok easily though but am committed to ‘cleaner energy’ for the next generation so hope to make the switch soon. We have an excellent solar setup with perfect orientation so charging during daylight hours will be a no-brainer’.

I agree with the comments re New Zealand. It’s an amazing country. ‘Love it’. One month on holiday in the South Island and you’ll wish you lived there. Hiking the Kepler Track is one of my favourite hiking memories and for my wife the memories of Milford Sound etc makes her smile. My little ‘Hiker Profile Icon’ (left) is me standing in the snow up high with Mt Cook in the distant back ground.

James Burkinshaw

Sam i pray that you willl succeed. It is a difficulat time of your life.

soufiane sammah

Prayng for you brother, You seem the guy that can find balance please do it for the sake of your family things like these are part of this life no one is finding what he is hopping for completely but you can get a perfect world inside your self an inner peace with what's going on around you and spread that to your surrounding people be strong.

Warren Corry

Ute was first made in Australia we converted a car and the yank started making them after our farmers kept cutting there cars down

SgTHerk

Viking! You even lift bro!?

Simon Pannett

Health has to be your #1 goal! Have you checked your family for Toxins via urine tests? Good place to start for curing long term issues!! Love the word Ute! Much better than "pick up"!

The Air Stig

Is this the new pickup truck that GM will sell to compete with the Ranger?

Tom Richarme

Your boys will need you more in the next 6 months than ever before. Guard your health for their sakes.

After 2 months of carnivore diet, I have lost 10kgs!

Somehow I don't think lithium (the raw mineral) is going down for little longer. There was only 2 miners that I know that have gone in production last year. I haven't heard of any getting the go ahead for this year. It takes 1-2 years to start up once financed and only once somebody finds $500-800million, and now interest rates are high. Resource companies almost pay double the amount for interest as they are a higher rise as they are yet to have a income.

Ron Matthews

What happened with the Tesla semi 🚛 production, sales and deliveries ?

Good on you my friend! 🙏
Greetings from Norway. 🇳🇴

If you believe Google, Ford Australia invented the Coupe ute, preceding the US pickup, but there are photos online of model T's with a wooden tray in the back. Whether they were modified later or factory I've got no idea.

Ian Burnett

The begining of the BYD ute story. Very:- cheap $25k. End of BYD ute story :-pricing on a parr with cyberchuck.

Gavin Busby

There is still debate who invented the first Ute and if you want to go back it was probably actually Volvo who produced 25 and later upscaled to light truck. There is also claim that Australia a guy in Australia designed the first ute when they asked ford to make them a one of a kind vehicle they could use for family and work. And Pick up is a terrible name.

Mika Davies

Mate…. Rule No1…. Your no good to the wife dead!! Whilst many of us love your channel, I'm sure we will survive on one less video per day… So that you can sleep.

The Anderson Family

Look after yourself Sam so you can look after your wife! 💪🏻

Chris Thirst

I don't think lithium prices are going down. Every ev maker wants to scale up. Byd, Tesla and all other linke xpeng or NIO lose money. What do they need to stop burning money?
Right. Sell more cars. So the demand is going way up. Sodium will most likely easy the situation in 2024 but in 2023 the production of sodium is just not there.
