Minehead is a brilliant location in West Somerset to fish the Bristol Channel for a range of species including Winter Cod. There are several charter boats in the small tidal harbour that take advantage of the great mixed fishing in the nearby waters. Today we are fishing with my friend Mikey Webber aboard his boat Teddy Boy, a brilliant platform for fishing charters.
Between February 16th – 19th we will all be taking part in the SBS Boatlife exhibition at the NEC in Birmingham. SBS Boatlife is a great show going from strength to strength and worthy of consideration for any boater to visit. This year they’ve got a new boat angling zone with many of the great brands in UK fishing, check out the website here :
You can use “FishLocker” as a discount code for your tickets and hopefully I’ll see you there.
If you are thinking of fishing the local area I can definitely recommend Mikey on Teddyboy Charters.

Anybody thinking about fishing from Minehead I can absolutely recommend fishing Mikey on Teddyboy. You will hopefully be seeing more of our fishing with him later in the year. In the meantime stay safe and take care. 😊👍🏻🎣
Why let the congers go? Undersize? Not good eating?
Codling reminds of Blackadder I 🤕
You call the fish a codling…is that a small or young cod? Are there size or weight limits when you catch cod or bass? Do you keep any of the eels? I'd heard of eel pie.
If you can't tell by my ignorance, I'm in the US and right now only fish fresh water or in salt water from a pier. I watched your tuna video and wished you could have kept them after the fight they put up. You are an amazing fisherman and so environmentally knowledgeable. It's a joy to watch.
A great watch, maybe I should try it one day. Great content John.👍
When a codling becomes a cod
Always good to see you in action
Great video John pal. Yes lovely looking codling that. Did you fillet it for him.
That’s a charter to add to my list , excellent video as always john .
Offhand do you know what overhead Reel Chris was using looked very versatile for its size. And thank you for a great Vid.
Are there any possebiletys for clam scollops lobster crabs foragin I don't know how the tides are in the upcoming days together with winds and rains .Well you know what I mean😀
Skipper I know, Banana goes over board or you do.
Magnificent fish, well done 👏
Really enjoyed that session. Lovely boat and something fun just using a running ledger on a bit of mixed ground. Always a good pull on the line with a roker in the tide 👍🏻
✨bananas✨
Last thing we want to hook is Rays….They just stretch ur mono. Hard on your Reels.
New Zealand.
Ps….. And Eels…Mainly Moray Eeels. Once you start getting those, you catch nothing else really. Maybe the smell on your line.
Hi John , bet that was a nice change for you to just sit and fish and not worry about all the boat stuff etc. jaw dropped seeing that banana onboard but instantly turned to laughter as he hooked into a fish 🤣👍🏼. Nice cod from the Bristol chocolate (channel) I’m heading there in may (family hols) rods will be with me 😁. appreciate your efforts mate👍🏼
Hello John me and my family love your videos, was just telling a friend of mine Steve Booton about the show, are there any sea fishing equipment stands selling tackle, its not very clear on the website, also are you going to be there on the Friday. Thanks, Steve
Great video but so sad to see the channel devoid of cod…
Go back to the "Golden period"
1987/2005 was a mecca every year at least one 30lb would be caught numerous 25lb plus fish and loads of 20lbs… All but gone now. Just what i call the vermin fish left..
Dogs
Straps
Rays..
Very sad.
Pity we couldn't manage our stocks like Norway and Iceland…
This is a Fsq from a non fisherman. In Brum at one of the Balti houses i used to have tandoori fish as a starter. Cut through with a central spine the meat in three sections. I was told it was Hake. I have not seen you mention Hake is it rare? Regards Phil C.
Perahu cantik dan ikan yg besar,
Kunjungi kami ya sahabat
When’s the next cook up at spargos vlog mate? Love them
Nice day on the water with the banana! What were the orange/yellow rod rests strapped on the rail?
Nice departure from the usual videos. Thank you…
27:20 cut the tail off chris's big one, tie it on the tailless and send er back. Lol.
Bananas mate. Lol🤣🤣🦀🦀🦀
The man who caught the first cod is eating a banana 😂.
Really enjoyed that! Thanks for posting.
Enover great day for fishing,Thanks for video 😉🍀👍
Nice 1 again John I follow you since I New your accent from Whitby my kids used to crab fish under the bridge facing the dolphin public house were we had refreshments it cost us 10p a crab they came back with 5£ worth and then off to nobles amusements lol thanks for the videos my friend
Always thought John "we gonna need a bigger boat"
Great atmosphere there John. Fantastic boat. I wouldn't want to pay the running costs though. 👍👍
John you at the NEC for the whole duration in February? We will come down and say hello. After watching your videos I’ve purchase my 1st fishing boat (Wilson flyer 17) still learning all from your invaluable tips and advice. Cheers buddy. Stewart
What’s with bananas John 😂
You fighting the tide catching fish. Me fighting snow below zero F cold weather and falling . What's wrong with this picture. 😕. Great video lad .good information as usual. . Keep up the great work for 2023 .
no spurdogs or smooth'hounds, thats not good. im going this friday with teddie boy hopeing for abit more i reckon.
I'd love to see on your channel you taking new or inexperienced people out and helping them to learn. I would volunteer, but I'm a bit camera shy!
Did my 1st ever sea fish a couple of weeks ago out of Penarth into the Bristol channel. I had a Thornback and Conger similar size to the 1st ones in the video, and a Codling a bit smaller than the one at 14:45. Was really interesting and enjoyed it a lot. Will try again in the summer though – don't think the temperature went above 3 degrees all day…🥶
👍👍👍👍👍
Great hook presentation on the half mackerel fillet…..I'll be trying that out bud……
Great trip out and on my doorstep…👍
Well done all nice selection of fish and looked a good day out. Thanks for another good vid John 😊
I fish the Welsh side of there. Bet the tide flow was an eye opener great fishing and a lovely cod too
Good stuff an enjoyable session. Which rod is that Chris was using?
Cheers 🍺
John, do you drift when using the running ledger rig? If yes what speed and I was wondering if the hook gets snagged at all? Thanks
That is absolute rubbish fishing from a Australian perspective. Every part of it. I hope you get to come here with the family for a big one.
I took a banana on a boat i was unaware of the superstition about it. I got slaughtered for it 🤣🤣 unfortunately I can't make the boat life show which is a shame was looking forward to meeting you mate. Great video and some lovely fish caught as well. All the best tight lines 🎣🎣🎣
Obviously bananas are not bad luck to ppl who don't believe in them being bad luck. You end up manifesting what you believe, if you believe it's bad for you then it will be bad for you so don't believe all those negative superstitions.
A really smashing boat, pity that there weren't many fish about though, at least you caught a dogfish so someone was satisfied! I was very surprised that nobody was wearing a life jacket, not that I could see anyway, would have thought that on a charter boat the skipper would have made wearing one a condition of hire. When, way back, I fished off Gorleston (Yarmouth) the skipper used to tell us that this was a condition of his insurance. We didn't have those fancy life jackets back then, just waistcoat buoyancy aids.
Ah, used to live/work in Minehead – never did get a chance to pop on the charters (mostly because of work).
Mikey is a top skipper and has a great boat. He works hard to find you fish. If you ever think of bringing your own boat over John, we now have a club tractor for launching at BBOSAA.
