February 23, 2023 New Jersey/Delaware Bay Fishing Report with Jim Hutchinson, Jr.

We’re six days away from the start of “outback” striper season in the Garden State, as well as winter flounder. Look for the bass next Wednesday, March 1 along the sod banks and river banks, while best bait for winter flounder is along the bulkheads in many North/Central Jersey inlets and salty rivers. Coming off the road this week at Philly and Edison, we’ve got a brand new audio podcast to talk about in the New Jersey, Delaware Bay edition of The Fisherman called The Road (see the link below). We’ll dive into the March edition (3:35) out this week, announce our Sterling wide tracker winners (4:45) from Edison and Oaks, and update you (6:50) on the next meeting of the New Jersey Marine Fisheries Council meeting on fluke, sea bass and porgies coming March 2, 2023. A few local head boats (7:32) are still sailing for blackfish and cod, but the transition (8:33) to “bloodworms” for striped bass and winter flounder is upon us. Expect Delaware River shad (9:47) to get underway pretty quickly this season as we begin our Shad Watch 2023 with the Pocono Outdoors Guy, and don’t miss the local events (11:31) coming up this weekend in New Jersey. Finally this week (12:26) we take another look at the “wind & whale” debate along the coast with Capitol Hills news out of both the 2nd and 4th congressional districts of New Jersey regarding field hearings and pending federal legislation to look into the industrial wind efforts along the coast and impacts on marine resources like marine mammals and recreational fishing. Finally this week, make sure to pick up a March copy of the New Jersey, Delaware Bay edition of The Fisherman Magazine as the NJDEP is hosting another internal meeting (16:50) regarding the future possibility of a paid, cash saltwater fishing license in the state of New Jersey.

Jim, I may have missed your report but I noticed they put jetties up in the bay at the end of radio road. Do you know what their purpose was for that?

There is no evidence to support the wind farms have anything to do with the whale deaths, 40% were caused by human interaction and they have been tracking increases in humpback whale deaths since 2016
