If you haven’t managed to finish off the main objectives for Lake Kingdom as of yet, you can follow along with our full walkthrough video at It includes the fishing Moon, but it also shows you where to find enough Power Moons to move on from the Kingdom, as well as taking on the Broodals boss fight over the Lake.
You’re bound to have already come across Lakitu hovering over the little pond in the space on the ledge between the Odyssey and Lake Lamode, but you might have struggled to get the Moon. This is largely due to complexity of the moves you have to get to grips with while fishing in Super Mario Odyssey. If you didn’t already get to grips with these in Sand Kingdom, which is where the first fishing Moon in the game can be found, then this will be your first experience with this type of Moon haul.
To start with, you’ll need to flick Cappy at Lakitu to capture him and then you can get down to the serious business of fishing. This is done by simply dropping you hook into the water with the Y button. The problem is that when your rod is down, you don’t have the full range of movement and you’ll continue to face in the same direction, which can make getting in front of the big fish a little but tricky. To compensate for this, you can simply raise the hook once again, which will give you full 360-degree movement once again. When you raise the rod, you’ll be able to point yourself in the right direction to approach the front of the fish to get into a better position to secure the catch.
Make sure you don’t drag the rod over the fish when the hook is down as this will result in the fish disappearing. You’ll need to then wait for it to reappear after this, so it’s worth taking care to avoid. When you can get in front of it, stay in play and let it come to you until you feel a rumble on the Joy-Con controllers. At this point, press Y to raise the line, which will trigger the reeling motion. For this, you just need to pull on the Left analogue control stick in the opposite direction to the fish and shake your Joy-Cons to reel it in faster. This will see Lakitu hauling it up out of the water to give you’re the Moon.
This will be yet another great Lake Kingdom Moon to add to your total, and its called Lake Fishing.

I finally got the fish while watching this video 😂
thank you so much it was driving me mad and i was rotating the Left joystick like a dickhead
Or I won,t subscribe
Tell me how to reel in now
How do you reel in
If the fish are completely ignoring your line, try reloading the area by warping to the nearest checkpoint.
I managed to get the fish on the hook four times but I didn't know what the vague L stick prompt meant. Here I was trying to real it in like you do in other fishing games by rotating the stick.
If rumble doesnt help, you can also hear the nibbling.
There's no nibbling sound, low nibbling sound and a higher nibbling sound. I could catch the Sand one waiting for the higher nibbling sound
yo animal crossing players be here.
trying to do this on the Switch Lite (which has no rumble) is near impossible.
Ok so just a tip, if you dont have rumble like on my PowerA controller.. the big fish hits your hook 6 times before disappearing, so on the 6th hit just reel him in 🤙or use a different controller/joy.cons lmao
Wow I'm stupid. I disabled the rumble on my controller
Apparently I suck at fishing,
I've spent like 30 minutes trying to catch that damn fish
Very tricky grr!

Wow I didn't even try to throw cappy at lakito… let me just adjust my to do list!
