Catching coho salmon when river is low and clear can be tough, but not impossible. In this episode I cast and retrieve spoons and spinners for Chilliwack River coho salmon before rain arrives this fall!

I love the hooks on prime lures .I have been fishing them for a couple of seasons .I will have to try the wider spoon you have been using .The ones i have are more like a croc profile. Another great video rod .Thanks. Broccoli elastic lol
Nice video I was fishing there yesterday
another great video, Rod. Keep doing what you do! My favourite way to fish. Keeps me engaged.
Another awesome video. Watched your stuff for many years now. Love chasing coho but getting color right always seems like a challenge for coho. Some say pink, orange, black and now I see chartreuse. What has been your learning over the years catching coho based on color? Thank you and best of luck on the river.
Great video rod like the spoon fishing keep the great work up !!!!
Great fishing Rod ! Question , is the Vedder classified water ? I've never been to the island and mostly fish zone 6 . Most rivers there are class one or two . It can get pretty pricey since I live in Alberta . Been fishing BC since the seventies and seen the salmon fishing opportunities disappear lately. Between fish farm and climate change the future looks uncertain . You are right about coho loving spinners , my son makes all the ones we use . Hammerd Colorado are the best in silver . Good luck bud .
Hey Rod, congrats on all the catches!! Just caught my very first coho last week on a spinner!!! 😀 I am going to try a spoon next time I go out as well. 2 questions if you dont mind from a novice. Have you ever tried fishing for coho with a kastmaster and if so any luck? And second, do you use scent and if so, what would you recommend?
what size of leader line? thanks
Only a spinner?! Amazing!! Going out Sunday morning to try and catch me some salmon!
I love the broccoli 🥦 rubber band 🤣
Great video Rod. Coho fishing has been tough for bank fishermen in Oregon this season. It is nice to hear your tips for low, clear water conditions.
can you still use a bobber if you are using a spoon luer
Can we make 3ft+ leaders and wool illegal now please? This is the problem in common spots. its spreading like a disease with new fishermen. Pocket flossing in certain stretches is one thing (doesnt bother sport anglers) BUT long lining and ripping in every decent run where sport anglers are fishing to trick a fish, should be an illegal act. Not only that 70% or so of the fish, wilds/hatch/juveniles/sockeye/low return fish are being damaged and killed by the method. The resolution is easy to see.
*Great vid, Rod.
P.S. stick your retrieve handle on the left side. -Takes 1 season to adjust but by the 2nd season it will feel “normal.”
*You will never go back if your dominant hand is the right.
Hey Rod I remember you said you use an Albright knot for your leader, but I have recently learned how to tie an FG knot and I totally swear by it now – you should check it out. It takes some practice and good dexterity to do it properly and cinch it down tight enough, but the end result is amazing. It's so low profile it flies through guides like it's not even there, and it even slides through the guide on my level wind reel no problem. Now I'm using longer leaders for this kind of river fishing even though the fish aren't exactly line shy, I find the little bit of extra stretch provides a great buffer for the hard fighting fish.
Just like all fishing knowledge, there's a bajillion how to tutorial videos here on YouTube, and seems there's about half a dozen good ways to tie the FG. I am a total convert and will evangelize the awesomeness of the FG everywhere I go!
You're an inspiration!
Hi Rod, great video! I’m going to come down next week from Kelowna. Question; have you ever used squid patterns for coho? Or, is it by and large just spoons and perhaps spinners? It’s been a fall to remember!
Man you are pretty good with those spoons! Can't seem to get the hang of it. Is that the river you normally fish? Looks pretty low. We need some rain here in Washington.
Are you tying a fluro bumper onto braid?
Looks like good lure, I’ll try them.
Thanks buddy
Rod, are these coho actually spawning where you're fishing, or is this well before they begin to pair up and dig redds?
saw your comment about cheap bands to tie rods, I go to a bike shop (REI) and get free discarded bike intertubes you cut off a cross section and they make fantastic rubber bands that last for seasons.
Another option if you don't have rubber bands are hair ties. I steal them from my wife. They work great.
I picked up what look like the same prime lures on Amazon two years ago. I new nothing about them .figured they were Cheap knock off lures .but I was wrong I have two left and they work .I was surprised when you showed them a couple episodes ago.
come to the comox valley! i'll take you coho and chum fishing on the punt!
Great info rod. Very tough year this year for cohos. Yet to hook one with lures but this gives me more confidence
I’ve been waiting for this video
Great video. I used to love catching salmon and trout on the fly, always did well till my health stopped me from fishing. Miss it a lot
Does anyone know where is this “Sandy Beach” spot at 9:47, was looking for it quite a long time?
Great video, Rod…very exciting
Is this in the Vedder?
Less people when Springs are gone, because Coho is too shy and much different to catch, nice…….
I have always wondered why ones cast with the right hand than have go to switch lead hands to reel right handed when you could reel with the left. Good video tho
Rod I can’t watch your videos anymore, I’m going broke ordering all the products you use🤪🎣
Man how do u find these spots
I got me a nice 30 lb Chinook last night before sunset 🌇
great clips as always, find it funny that you cast then swap around the rod to the other hand to start the retrieve
Love the video
I have never caught a coho in my life but seems like they are excellent fighters. Looks like you had a great time!
Well done Rod, my experience as well! Float fishing is less effective than other methods in current water conditions. I have been using Jigs and lure/spinner combos with good success. I see your nice clean truck with the boat atop almost ever am. I know where you go? 😉 Thanks for an excellent vid!
dropped a video at 3am!! get some sleep!!!!
Living in abbotsford i sure would love to meet you at vedder for a good day
And we know who told you “no more fishing” until you get those videos up! Ha!
Good move with the change to the spinner.
Man , I miss living in burnaby. Nice work.
AWESSOME!!!
Another great video. I just started fishing this month and your videos have been very helpful.
Nice❤
