Murdaugh Murder Trial Recap & Impressions (Day 27) | Prosecution Closing Argument!

Creighton Waters delivered the prosecution’s closing argument today in the trial of Alex Murdaugh. Let’s review some of the highlights of the state’s closing argument and talk about what we might expect to see from the defense tomorrow.

The trial of former South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh is taking place in Colleton County, SC. Murdaugh is accused of fatally shooting his wife, Maggie Murdaugh, and his 22-year-old son, Paul Murdaugh, in the summer of 2021.

FYI – this end-of-day breakdown comes based on requests for reaction as things continue to develop. Trying to summarize a full week of this trial during Friday Night Frenzy has been fairly all-consuming, and I’d like to get back to that show being more of a general recap of the full week in different topics…not all-consumed by Murdaugh. Hope you enjoy.

If AM is talented enough to stay clean, make 2 shotguns vanish, and intelligent enough to steal from his place of business for a decade; why couldn’t he make MMs cell phone disappear?

GMoney

they said a juror fell asleep today in closing

Rob, men have killed their families for far dumber reasons. Like, to be with another woman or other factors. He's also a drug addict that wasn't thinking clearly and Maggie could have confronted him about money and I think the judgment of his wife and son who actually did care what he was doing with drugs were going to find out they were broke and what he had done. It was also to avoid their judgment of him and to avoid others since they'd be lenient with him while he was grieving this murder because who is going to also interrogate him at work about money when his family was murdered…. They are gonna wait on that because no one wants to be that AHole and be like sorry about your family but… So I think it compounds with money, investigations, drugs, status and respect in community all going to hell so what else did he have to lose if Maggie left him for money and his son thought he was a scumbag for stealing. Buster wants to be like his dad but not Paul. Paul was like John Marvin and wanted no part of Law.

Mr Waters: He lies lies lies…
Also Mr Waters: What kind of person lies

Idk 🤷‍♀️ off the top of my head…a compulsive liar who solves all real and perceived problems by lying..as you’ve agonizingly established.

If someone always lies why would they suddenly not be lying especially under that much stress.

But seriously…I have no doubt it was him. He has grief, but no outrage at being falsely accused. I wouldn’t stop being outraged. The killers are loose and I’m in here? No way…I wouldnt shut up about it.

What drives me crazy is the photographic memory. Photographic memory is what you see!! He may have a good memory, but for the love, use the correct terms

Joyful Dre

What if the motive just not fully correct…. this is the deep south HIS family name was going to be dragged around on the boat case… that is a major thing and issue in the south. His son screwed up.. I have no problem thinking he could kill his son over that

Mr Waters is so unlikable. His expressions, posture on the podium, droning on and on… How much does lawyer likability play on jury decisions?

State claims the guns used were Murdaugh guns because they found used shells around the property that matched the ones used. Q. How does that eliminate the guns of all the friends and family that would come out and shoot there? I did not hear that they had tested any others. Did I miss that?

The host says it is only Tinsley 's opinion that all the air would be taken out of the boat case. No, the criminal boat case disappears and Tinsley is in control of the civil case, so not just an opinion.

(I've been having dreams about this case, it's consumed me) The thing that wakes me up is if not Alex, then who?? Theres no other suspects. I am firm in my belief that he did it. I just can't fathom the idea that no one will be held accountable. One thing that bugs me though, how would killing Maggie and Paul possibly help his financial crisis. I've come to my own conclusion that, being the poster boy for narcissism, Alex could not face them finding out the truth. He didn't want to face their judgement. I think he did plan to commit suicide at some point…. but that Cousin Eddie thing? Nope. Not buying it.

You read a chat about the victims of the financial crimes not getting their day in court if AM pleads out on those cases. Isn't that wrong? Wouldn't there be an opportunity for the victims to make an impact statement during the sentencing phase?
And some of them may get three bites at the apple, since there are three indictments (covering about a hundred charges) which may mean three sentencing hearings.

William C. Riley

I feel like the state got the motive wrong. Not that they needed to prove motive. But it diminished there argument.

Based on AM’s admission on the stand, whoever did this to Paul had hate in his heart. Then to his sister-in-law, AM said whoever was doing this was planning it for a while.

For these statements to he true, and AM to be guilty, then the premeditation began before the financial parts were coming to a head. It could be a growing hate toward the “little detective”. It could be the utter recklessness of Paul, resulting in a variety of things that needed to be swept under the rug which could destroy a century+ of Murdaugh power. The boat case, then becomes the primary catalyst. Gives time for the volunteer, assistant, solicitor to start planning. It’s possible even that AM’s father said “this boy is going to be the death of our legacy” and the news of Mr Murdaugh’s health pushed AM to do it that day. Needs to get it done before daddy is gone.

But the financial aspect seems the least likely motive. Yes the boat case maybe goes away, but the financial part is not going to be resolved thru their death.

As for conscience of guilt. One loose string I wish the state would pull was the fact that the day of the roadside incident, AM called for his insurance card. Bianca testified weeks ago. It was a small part she shared. Buried in amongst other things. But pull that fact forward. AM told you he intended to he dead. His attorneys have reported this. But if AM intended to die that day, why would he call hours before to get his insurance card? If you are intending to be dead, you don’t need insurance. And, if he intended to he dead, why had he not made sure Buster was provided everything he needed to access the life insurance? While it wasn’t his particular area of law, as a lawyer he has to know how many hoops needs to be jumped thru by survivors to get their money. He took no logical steps for someone trying to die and make sure his son gets it.

Lisa-NJ

the "sympathetic figure" DOES make the boat case go away. He needed the civil case to go away because the boat case was going to investigate his finances.

I'm always late.

Why would his brother John Marvin (?) tell the jury that Alex looked freshly showered?

Surely if Alex showered when he said he did; after riding with Paul and before dinner, then he wouldn't have looked freshly showered by the time John Marvin arrived after 10.30pm?

Sandra Alty

I would not have been connected as a juror, waters was personal and boring…lost me paid too much attention to money and lying. Big judge errors

Blanca found Maggie’s wedding rings under seat in her car

POLL : How long will the jury deliberate?
A- 1 to 10 hrs
B- 10 to 20 hrs
C- 20 to 30+ hrs
D- I have no damn idea. 😂

Victoria Gómez

I really appreciate your neutral position.

TheSteadfastStitcher

Replay crew here. Why haven't they brought up that Maggie owned Moselle? There may not be life insurance, but this property is worth a lit of $$. I'm currently at AM was involved, but not certain he pulled the trigger. For a narcissist with a family legacy, that can be pretty powerful.

Desie Custer

Replay crew. Enjoyed the commentary.

Thanks to all the group for the questions and throughout the trial it’s been great to hear so many viewpoints for many answers.

Karen Nixon

I do think he had a plan, and carried it out. When you’re desperate, prominent w lots of connections n on drugs, you can have both true
