nowadays is the last day of March, marking the goal of Women ‘s History Month. Women have long contributed to the military and the roles they fill continue to grow, offering them many of the same opportunities their male counterparts have. Some women dream of being engineers, technicians, astronauts, rocket scientists and the like but lone in the final few decades have the barriers to these career paths lifted. The military has played a key function in that change and now women can pursue equitable about any career way they choose. One Navy Veteran and C4I plan drawing card did good that.
Wendi Sekach leads the Maritime Tactical Command and Control System ( MTC2 ) team in the Command and Control Systems Program Office ( PMW 150 ). MTC2 was developed for commanders at sea and ashore to get a approximate real-time snapshot of the battlespace such as blue/red forces, ordination, set and weather data and the identification of nearby transit vessels. Wendi knows how crucial meter is to warfighters and her broadcast will provide them with a tool to consolidate critical information and visualize data into a coordinated word picture, helping expedite decision make.
She is proud to be the adjunct program director of such an enabling instrument that will serve the warfighter and recently shared that pride with RADM Nancy Norton, Director of Warfare Integration for Information Warfare/Deputy Director, Navy Cybersecurity at the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association ’ mho WEST 2017 in San Diego.
” I had a half hour of dedicated continuous time to speak with her [ RADM Norton ] about my plan. You do n’t very get that outside of events like this, ” said Wendi. “ We talked about MTC2 ‘s respect to the fleet and I was gallant to partake my confidence in the team and the system ‘s capabilities. ”
Wendi is from Albuquerque, N.M., and spinal column in school she recognized computers as the curl of the future and this realization is what led her to join the Navy and pursue a career in technology. In the Navy she was a Data Processing Technician ; a Navy rate hanker since replaced by the multi-faceted Information Systems Technician pace. After active duty, Wendi started her career as a civilian mastermind testing C4I systems as a contractor until she was accepted for a politics position with the Joint, Test & Evaluation team at Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center, Pacific.
From there she transitioned to the Airborne, Maritime, Fixed-Joint Tactical Radio System, then to her current position at Program Executive Office for Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence ( PEO C4I ) where she was promoted to managing Navy Acquisition Category I programs within PMW 150. Wendi learned a lot over the years, giving her the experience needed to manage a challenging program like MTC2 that will bring increase capability to the fleet.
Wendi keeps the challenges and the big picture in mind when she is working on a project or broadcast and MTC2 is no different. “ You have to keep the goal of providing the warfighter with the best potential, most efficient tools needed to better do their job, ” Wendi said.
” The biggest challenge for MTC2 was nailing down the requirements, ” said Wendi about getting MTC2 off the ground. “ In acquisition it all starts with requirements. If you do n’t get the requirements right, it is hard to have diligence or our developers build you the product that you need, or more specifically to satisfy the warfighter ’ s needs, ” she said.
Wendi has worked many years for the Navy both as a Sailor and a civilian and there is one changeless she has noticed over the years.
” If you look across PEO C4I you will notice there are few women in leadership roles so for me, being in a leadership role of a program that is talked about from the Pentagon, to the PEO, and at all levels throughout the services is huge, ” she said. For Wendi, taking ownership of her course of study is vital and when briefing senior leadership, she always strives to convey confidence, professionalism and integrity.
Wendi does n’t mind sharing her pride in her professionalism both as a technical technical and a charwoman. She has young women that look up to her, including her daughter and niece, and she wants them to believe they can do anything they want.
” I would tell my daughter, my niece, even my nephew the same if asked. Both my niece and nephew are interest in computers so I push them both toward STEM programs, ” said Wendi. “ I tell them to follow their dreams and their only limits are the ones they place on themselves. ”
