Snow, Wind, and Cold, This Wasn't in the Forecast / Winter Truck Camping

This week I stayed at the Maplewood State Park near Pelican Rapids Minnestoa. I stayed overnight in the truck camper and the park was empty. The weather forecast was calling for warmer temperatures all week, but Mother Nature had different plans. It was cold, windy and the snow started falling around 2am Sunday night. I tried my hand at making ribs in the Dutch oven. They turned out great, however I had to sacrifice half the rack to the campfire gods. I hiked through the woods looking for a prime location to put a camera to observe the northern lights but wasn’t able to get a clear shot of the horizon. I jumped on the bike to check further away but came up empty handed. It was all good though, the snow would have made the lights impossible to see. The weather channel is calling for snowstorms and blizzard conditions this week. Next week’s video might be interesting. Thanks for coming along on this week’s adventure. I’ll see ya down the road.

Hi Kenny, Looks like you had a nice hike and bike ride. Ribs are some of my favorite cuts of meat, that and Ribeye, Mmmm. Sorry about the loss of your ribs. Hannah will be a happy girl. Thank you for taking us a long on another winter camping trip. 😉 You make it look so easy. We really enjoyed camping in the snow with you. Have a wonderful week. Mary 💕 Fred

Great video Kenny! Glad your dog was able to eat the ribs so they didn't go to waste. I laughed out loud at the "dry as a popcorn fart" comment. 🤣

Gav Mc

Hi Kenny,
Great content as usual. Love the sound of the crisp snow.
I'm looking at getting one of these bikes, how easy is it to change the speed limiter?

Steve Annett

Dude I only watch your stuff because its pure ,,, I would have ate all those ribs though ! LOL

Steve Annett

love that your doing the cooking outside ! Another killer Kenny ! And ribs !!! Hail yes sir!

allen mccarriston

I think you need another air freshener hanging above your drivers side rear door grab. Hahaha!

Washington shuts down a majority of the state parks on the east side of the Cascade mountains in the winter.
That’s nice that Minnesota keeps some of them open in the winter.

NH Bomar

Your videos are awesome – real struggles and all !!

Jessica C

I have to know what the time lapse was between when you realized the key for the bike wasn't on your Keychain and when you showed back up saying you found them!! 🤣

Brian Bouchard

Great episode, can never have enough dog treats.

Lily Mac

I live under 25 miles from Maplewood SP. There's lots of nice hiking trails all throughout the park. I've never camped there in winter. I might just have to dig out my Scamp from behind the huge snowbank my son leaves when he clears my driveway and try out winter camping. Always enjoy your videos.

Me and my daughter go to Maplewood state Park almost every weekend in the spring through to fall. Such a beautiful place it is in the winter, thanks for these videos you do now I need to explore winter more.

Richard Koch

Hi Kenny, hope you're not getting that 1-2 feet of snow like their forecasting. We're getting the rain from that system now.
That's normal for broth & stock box's. I use these all the time and it's normal. Man those ribs looked good…..the one that went in the ash I could of handled….no problem.
Your new bike is kick butt! Looks like it did awesome on the hard pack for you.
Thanks again for bringing us along, I am envious of your ventures!
Stay safe…..can't wait for next weeks edition!

Bea Cee

Love Winter! It’s beautiful there!

I see your using your fridge , how do you keep it from freezing the lines. My compressor doesn’t work in the cold. I heard some people use a light bulb to keep warmer.

William Derrick

Ribs in a dutch oven, really, you're killing me smalls, oh my goodness that sounds so. By the way, last week's video, I loved it. Anyway, great video is always Kenny and blessings to you and yours.

OneEyed Mike

Winter camping is crazy! Camping without beer is just sitting around in the woods. What brand and model bike? I have a 350 watt Gotrax l

John Shimkus

I take it that you never heard of the 5 second rule, I would have dusted off the ribs and still eaten them. Thank-you for the video really enjoyed it! Take care 🙂

None Ya

Ok, did you say "drier than popcorn farts"?! 🤣

Cutawhiskie Ramblings

Enjoyed your trip this week. Hope you fair well with the big storm headed your way. I have headed out Friday for a short trip. 82 here tomorrow the 50 on Saturday back to 70 on Sunday

Billy T

do state parks still have the power on in winter? how common is that? what do they change?

Ray Lau

I love Winter camping! No bugs and less people, cooking over an open fire, and having electrical hookups is a big bonus. I'll be spending even more time in my Truck & Camper when I'm retired later this year. Love your video's!! If you ever come up to BC I can show you many "Out of the Way" places. Be safe and have fun discovering new areas to camp!

neht ml

Did you say as dry as a popcorn fart!? 🤣😂🤣 LOVE that your personality is showing through more and more with each video!!
I need to look into that state park. It really looks amazing!! Thanks for the laughs and scenery..
Love this video Kenny!!

Lawrence

Your not fooling anyone. You ate those ribs.

Lawrence

At least you have winter camping. Pennsylvania doesn’t have it.

Bary Thompson

You’re always a trooper Kenny, love your videos! Those ribs looked really good, I’m going to try the Dutch oven method, I’ve always done them on the smoker but those looked pretty good. Appreciate all the time you take to make great videos!

roycefiles

I was so disappointed when the ribs fell into the fire, I let out a loud 'Oh no!' I had to explain that I was watching a camping video and nothing was wrong. Maplewood is pretty nice park and it can get crowded on the weekends in summer. But the terrain is unlike anything else for miles around. Lots of good hiking there.
Hope the roads were good on the way home for you. I was up in Devils Lake on Monday and they closed the interstate in the early evening, so my crew had to fight through county and state roads to get home and the roads had quite a bit of drifting.

Jonathan Chouinard

I would have definitely eaten that half rack, looked incredible! Great video as always!

Kevin Thom

Awesome video, beautiful scenery and crazy cold for me

Curt Van Der Werff

You need a set of chains for the bike.

tracy meeks

Great video Kenny! And now you know about those broth containers ;). Love the recipes and tried one out a week ago on a 5 day excursion. The chicken and wild rice and man was it good and fun to make . I added mushrooms and condensed mushroom soup. You keep it real when you show that things don't always go as planned.

Wow! What an incredibly beautiful area you took us to, again, for the weekend! Ooooh those ribs looked scrumptdelicious, 🤤 gotta love when they fall right off the bone with little to no effort. Bummer ya lost a rack though, they went down like Frazer! 😮

Haha, popcorn fart…haven’t heard that one in a long time! Lol

Anyways, thank you again for taking us along aaaaand is it next Tuesday yet???

As always, stay safe out there…..

P.S. Don’t know if you know or not, but Larry’s dog Fraiser past away last week sad😢
