Logo MMA header For over 100 years, actually 122 and count, Massachusetts Maritime Academy has stood out as the nation ’ sulfur oldest and highly involve Maritime College .
The Academy is alone in many ways, not the least of which is our disciplined regimental experience to all cadets that provides the skills necessary to develop into good leaders. Cadets inaugural learn to be function of a team and, over the four years, develop the needed leadership experiences to finally manage a group of others .
After its establish in 1891, the Academy ’ s primary coil educational focus was to prepare men and women for careers on farming and sea. But that was yesterday, and yesterday ’ second gone. today we do much more .
We now offer undergraduate degrees in Emergency Management, Facilities Engineering, International Maritime Business, Marine mastermind, Marine Safety & Environmental Protection and Marine Transportation. Graduate degrees are offered in Emergency Management and Facilities Management.

And as a submit university we are able to keep the cost low-cost for our students. In fact, our Academy has placed itself in the forefront of higher education. As noted in erstwhile department of education Secretary William J. Bennett ’ s holocene reserve – “ Is College worth It ” …. Out of 4,000 colleges and universities in America, entirely 150 are worth going to and the ONLY public college in New England that made the list is Massachusetts Maritime .
During the last two decades we have clearly grown and prospered, developing newly majors, and preparing our cadets for the ever changing worldly concern they will enter upon gradation. That is why this new partnership with the New England Council is such a valuable addition to our continued growth. Our President, Admiral Richard G. Gurnon, explains it this way :
“ As Massachusetts Maritime Academy broadens its traditional base beyond the business of ships and sends her graduates into engineering, disaster response, marine guard, green-renewable energy and shipping positions throughout the New England, the events staged by the New England Council are arrant network opportunities for us to meet authoritative contacts in those diverse fields. ”

Our staying ahead of the swerve doctrine is distinctly in evidence when visiting our beautiful Cape Cod Canal campus. The first thing that will stand out, beyond the beauty of our seaside location, is our 540 foot Training Ship – The TS Kennedy. She was named for the first Maritime Administrator, Joseph P. Kennedy. The embark, a float classroom, takes our cadets to sea during our annual winter SEATERM SEMESTER .
But something else will besides catch your eye as you enter campus – Our 660kW WIND TURBINE. Since 2006 the Academy began generating electricity. And while this was not the first step in sustainability…it was, as MMA Vice President Francis X. McDonald noted, a big statement in MMA ’ s committedness to a green future.

Said he, “ MMA ’ second sustainability platform includes the facility of renewable energy systems including photovoltaic systems, combined inflame and power microturbines, a vertical-axis wind generator, and a 48 well geothermal playing field. The Academy i9nitiated green cleanse and buying programs, comprehensive recycle, research into alternate energy processes including biofuel and hydro-kinetics, and energy and water system efficiency measures. ”
We are quite gallant of our Academy, and quite gallant of our modern affiliation with – The New England Council, vitamin a well .
