I love a good ditch to fish in. This one even surprised me how the fish were living in this creek that was not even flowing. The redfin Pickerel is such a cool fish and can live in such shallow water. The aggressive hits from such a tiny fish are so much fun to watch.

Very cool little spot and the red fin pickerel to boot! We have some chain pickerel in IL and regular Northern pike. Chain pickerel like the red fin are pretty tolerant to warmer water. So much fun on the light and ultralight spinning gear. Blessings brother John
Down here in Florida, that "type of Pike" gets 12 – 14 inches and are real good eating. Most of us "jig" with a top water bait to get them to hit. Great fun because of how hard they hit.

Awesome redfin! I know about the pickerel but I live in central Canada. The only Esox species up here are pike and muskie. I have never caught any pickerel yet, not even chain. East coast trip sounds great 😉

I was raised up in south GA and all the little creeks were loaded with red fin pike we used cane pole and a strip of cut bait

We got Redfin pickerel here near Philly, they’re in super small creek system and seem to be in isolated populations it’s crazy lol they’re actually a rare species for PA
I call redfin the king's of shallow water. I try to use single hooks when I target them. They seem to be sensitive like trout in my experience
Have you ever considered going barbless? There isn't much, if any difference, in landing percentage. The real advantage comes from being able to release your catch faster (= more fishing time) with less harm. Plus, unhooking yourself, when things don't according to plan, is much easier.
Cool video! Do you have chiggers in Tennessee? If so, what do you use to avoid such abominations? That grass looks like it would house chigger cities. My legs/ankles get eaten up in NC and that is with shoes/socks/pants…

I had no idea any pike species lived further south than Tennessee.. very interesting. I had heard of the redfin pickerel but thought I'd have to travel north for them. Looks like I'm adding Georgia to the list of places to fish!

One other thing: I always catch them in real still water. Usually with lots of snags and cover. Like this video, I catch them with warmouth a lot.
Bend the barbs down and you will be able to release them easier. Have to keep the pressure on thou. Nice videos guys
Fun video! I live in North Florida, and I love catching redfins! I catch them with little popping bugs and surface mufflers on a little 3w flyrod. Try your smallest surface lure. They hit ‘em like torpedos! They’re like full-out muskies in attitude- but 8 inches long. Good times…
My last fishing trip had a lot of fish with commitment issues. Lots of bites but few takers. Going to try again tomorrow I hope.
Roostertail is my goto in rivers and creeks like the hellgrammite or Yumdinger is yours! I put a little 4-ball chain swivel about a foot above them to help prevent line twist and still let the blade spin like it should. My brother and I used to make trips regularly targeting chain pickerel (we call them Jack in South Alabama), but I've only ever caught redfin pickerel in crawfish rakes. Grass pickerel fall in between the chain and the redfin, maxing out at about 13 inches or so. Stay safe!
I`ve caught northern pike in the creeks around my area but have a better chance for one in the river about 7 miles away.
