Winter Camping in a Snow Storm, Solo Backpacking the North in a Blizzard – Howling Winds (Extended)

In this video I go Winter Camping in a Snow Storm/Blizzard without a hot tent, it has been a while since I went Winter Camping in a Snowstorm so this is an extended version, nearly twice as long as the original in anticipation of Winter Camping season that starts soon. I found the Storm Sounds from the second camera I was bringing and used that for its better wind sound quality. Using my Hilleberg Soulo & new Hyperlite Mountaingear Southwest 4400 backpack, I couldn’t resist going out backpacking & camping in this snow storm, or blizzard, that has been going on for a week. The forecast said 28m/s, 63mph or 101km/h winds with minus ÷10°c or 14°F temperatures. I choose snow shoes for this early winter season trip, since the snow hasn’t settled yet. It was wild but beautiful as I found a spot in the forrest with a bit more shelter from the wind. First trip with my new Hyperlite Mountaingear Southwest 4400 backpack.

(Extended version)

This extended version has a more detailed look at preparing and setting up camp, as well as more time in the tent and a full gear list. I have also used the sound from both cameras I brought.

Check out this other winter camping video as well

Full gear list at the end of the video.

Do you have any idea what the tracks were in the snow? I have severe hearing problems so I watch with no volume. So if you said it in the video, I apologize👍🏻

Another beautiful video! I really like these extended versions!
I was wondering if you have ever tried any of those pop up tents? I am no camping expert, but I think it might save you a considerable amount of time and effort, especially under such rough weather conditions…

Great video!
But, I have to say, the tent could actually kill you in a true winter emergency situation. How many tie-downs on the poles? 4 or 500?! How easy would this be at the edge of exhaustion with cold, numb hands? It is, in my opinion, too fussy for prime time.

Was your food frozen lol. Great video man. You got a new subscriber here.

Jarl, have you considered listing your food and liquid items, so others can understand what it takes to keep your energy going on your trips? Excellent work on your videos…from a fellow Norwegian (50 percent, at least)!

sam hill

Jarl, it didn't take long to get enough of that. Tough with the blowing snow and trying to walk around the tie downs with the snow shoes on. Was the stove gas frozen? Interesting trip.
