This video is audio recording of Chris Van Dusen’s book A Camping Spree with Mr. Magee. It is not intended to replace purchasing this delightful story or others by Mr. Van Dusen. It is purely a mother’s attempt to make Story Time more interesting for the little ones…and sometimes my secondary ELA students!
Discussion topics for LITTLE ONES:
1) Mr. Magee loves his dog Dee so much that they went on vacation together. Do you have a pet you love a lot? If not, what kind of pet would you want? Where would you want to go with your pet?
2) Have you ever been camping? What did you enjoy about it? If you haven’t been camping, what sounds exciting about camping in a place like Mr. Magee’s choice?
Discussion topics for OLDER ONES (yes, I read this to my middle and high school ELA students):
1) What lesson are we meant to learn from Mr. Magee (and his little dog, Dee)? (HINT: think about the topics in the story, then think about what the author wants you to learn about one of the topics).
2) A common thread in modern literature is the flawed villain. The “poor” bear is vision impaired and ends up solving the very problem he created. Can you think of other popular books or movies that have a backstory that explains some of the villain’s character flaws? Why do you think this plot element is so popular nowadays?
