Why AlphaTauri refuses to make its 2023 F1 car a Red Bull copy

AlphaTauri may be Red Bull’s second-team, but its newly-launched 2023 car shows it’s still keen to go its own way in terms of design.
That’s despite having access to parts from Red Bull Technology, which also makes the all-conquering Red Bull F1 car. Although AlphaTauri uses some parts, it doesn’t go anywhere near as far as Haas does in its Ferrari partnership.
The AlphaTauri AT04 that was revealed in renders released in tandem with its New York fashion show launch event uses the same Honda power unit, gearbox, hydraulics and rear suspension as Red Bull. But it does the rest itself.
Although what’s called the synergy programme, which was adopted in 2019, is designed to maximise crossover with Red Bull, AlphaTauri has favoured picking and choosing its parts in recent years. This year, that means a mix of 2022 and 23-specification Red Bull parts, as well as plenty of its own design.

Captain Ross

I think maybe it should be a redbull clone, it might be a more consistent upper midfield performer.

Mr J

If you Yuki doesn't pan out Daniel Ricardo will be in that car next year.

Wilbert Pamplona

Which is a sister team or a farm team

wexfordrob

Is this the most pointless team in f1?

Devon Genereux

god thats a nice looking car

GravyGoodness

As long as Dookie Suzuki is more concerned about hitting the snack bar instead of the podium, then they're only operating at 50%. I like him, but he seems less focused than a lot of other drivers.

JevonB 100

My tinfoil cap is on. The red bull Ford deal, when 2026 comes AT I’ll probs be a Ford team, going off what the race said I believe AT will be come Ford and loose the sister team.

Matej Bálint

AT04 render is "shot" by wider lens then photo of AT03, and that creates an optical distortion that front wheels are moved forward. If you look at left front wheel of both cars you can see that at AT03 right front wheel covering left one more than in picture of AT04

D K

"Nah we dont wanna be like our championship winning partners" … Pro strat bro

Alexandra L

Shout out to the race Media for ruining WTF1

Darrin Warner

To not use the full allowable RB parts is arrogant and dumb.

Perun S

So AT sells only kid sizes?

Chris McMurray

I imagine AT need a different car to RB. RB are likely to optimise the design for front running where as I would think AT want to optimise their car for running in the dirty air of the mid field.

Vince Longman

This is why I'm fine with RedBull owing 2 team, as AlphaTauri clearly do their own engineering. Also IMO its good having a team dedicated to introducing rookies into F1. That's something I don't like about HAAS now

Jean Gagnier

After 15 years, I still don’t understand how a serious sporting organization would allow 2 of its 10 participants to have the same owner. They can’t sell the team soon enough.

Oh, and it’s an early candidate for best-looking car on the grid yet again. I quite liked the navy/white combo, and if they must have Orlen red on there, it still looks smart. I’d ditch the spikes under the mirrors, though.

KieferClarkF1

I wouldn't be so quickly to discount De Vries as a possible Red Bull driver in the future.

Minu

An italian based team would be great for the Andretti F1 project

KTL

The problem with 2022 AlphaTauri was Gasly, end of story.

Paul Jennings

Is it me or does the A.T look like the Haas?

Jonathan Bluhm

Who is actually a fan of this team?

Joao m

Looks like a Sauber from 2010s

BlagoP

Why does Alpha Tauri even bother? Just build a 2022 Red Bull and that will automatically bring it in the top 5.

Colonel 100

Alpha Tauri is a way of testing experimental designs, for certain parts or overall concepts. I don’t think it’s out of the question for AT to innovate a system or part, that would place it in the top 3 in certain races. We’ll have to wait and see.

Josh N

Really enjoy your content, thanks for making quality F1 content.

Luper

I don’t see AT improving much this year and ending up at the end of the pack. Hopefully team is sold to Andretti and new owners create something podium worth

Minovsky Particles

Alpha tauri can be bought by honda

Rob Cabrera

I have a simple dream. I want Checo to win the World Drivers Championship with RedBull, and RedBull Racing and AlphaTauri in second, third, and fourth. I also want Vettel, Alonso, and Kimi to be in the other 3 cars.

FŁamingo

With so many bodies looking into entering F1, it's a matter of time until AT gets sold

Good Putin

Honda should take over Alphatauri

TheLouwryder

I look forward to De Vries smashing Piastri

Nick Lame

RB and AT should share same budget or let some new team to take over AT.

Jackosaurus117

Please just bring back Toro Rosso. Nobody even wears “Alpha Tauri” clothes

Saf

2:18 They now have the shortest pairing on the grid so they make the car longer?

Ricky

I think DeVries is a candidate to replace Perez. He has the highest respect of Verstappen. He could be good enough to be there but old enough to not really challenge him.

Mark Williams

Sell to Andretti or Porsche, pointless team.

denithy

The real reason: We can try different directions and development plans, and give ourselves more data.

Jake M

Are you sure the wheelbase has been lengthened?

Looking at your comparison picture, the halo is at a different position on both cars, even though it’s a standard part – so it seems to have photo’d at a different angle:

Ian Hobday

Every team? It's pretty hard to imagine Ferrari considering a sale of their F1 team.

luka luka

Love the livery
10/10 from me

Craig Moy

Got HONDA written all over it

Carlos Clemente

Anyone else asked them selves where's Peire? Lol

Pieter Van Breda

Imagine Alpha Tauri coming out in 2023 faster than Red Bull.

DJ Panncake

crazy, how the silly season started at the driver market, went on to the team principals and now the sponsors are running around as well, Gulf to Williams, Orlen to Alpha Tauri, …..

BBBenj

This car sounds promising!

Dreamy

AlphaTauri should just field an identical car to Red Bull and just pull a Racing Point/Mercedes and Haas/Ferarri clone.

Roël Konings

I love these speculation videos it is what I am blabbing to my girlfriend all day while she has no idea what i am on about
