This is Ruining Electric Cars

The charging experience is just as important as the car experience. And it’s lagging way behind.

The BS can't be hidden anymore…

Solar Farmer

I love the EV concept and I don’t really have an issue with technology as I’ve installed and been using solar for nearly a decade. But these technologies are finicky to say the least. Just think of when your cellphone charging connection starts to wear. It starts to have charging issues. It would help to have standardization of these kinds of things, but monopolies usually govern that market. Think DVD codecs. How many did we go through…? Now Solar.. How many different products, strategies and ways can it be employed? To experience this lack of infrastructure in an emerging industry will not give buyers the confidence they need to transition. Forcing them into EV’s is a predictable disaster once laws are implemented prohibiting the masses in buying ICE vehicles. To put it bluntly, “It’s really dumb.” I am waiting for newer battery technologies that outperform lithium and reduces the environmental and humanitarian impact that lithium and cobalt have. But I’ll also be waiting for the infrastructure to improve because our vehicles are an every day convenience that should remain…convenient. At nearly 60 years of age, I’m hoping I don’t fall behind in technological savvy, but I’d rather just be able to fuel/charge up without having to MacGyver everything every time I need to charge.

Great video. Honestly, I own an ICE and am looking forward to adopt an electric vehicle soon. I truly believe, absent private corporation intervention, things like public chargers are going to be woefully maintained and largely absent. Why? This whole policy of electrification of the USA is contingent on one thing: politicians actually caring about the infrastructural integrity of our country.

How many of you drive to and fro from work wondering how the hell your city does not have better roads? To take that question and it’s answer to its logical end, if politicians/local government agencies don’t care about our roads what’s going to make them want to maintain public chargers (absent the proper lobbying incentives of course😅)?

I literally laughed out loud watching this video. Anybody with a calculator and 2 brain cells can determine, rather easily, that the combined load of every commuting person in North America, plugging their electric car in at night, would create and unbelievably large draw on the electricity grid. The infrastructure is AT MINIMUM 25 years behind the development of the vehicles, if not longer. These issues will plague electric cars for a LONG time. And the more ppl that buy one the worse it will get. Get used to the struggle or sell it now while you still can.

I feel charging an electric vehicle is much easier than pumping gas.

NotJustAnyDad

I drive an EV6, and I charge at home mostly. But I've had a frustrating time trying to find chargers in some areas. I've also run into issues with non EvGo and EA stations. It's an annoyance. I've also seen new and better managed stations start to pop-up. It's still early in the non Tesla EV game. We're about 5-8 years away from an acceptable network. It was likely 15-25 years away from a universal network.

David R

Everyone who buys an electric vehicle is still a beta tester, a decade later. And as a beta tester you know that things are going to be buggy.

Byrne

EVs are trash get over it

Matt

Moral of the story: buy a hybrid for now if you live in “normal” America

JB NC

I personally have no interest in an EV due to them being way overpriced, lack of charging points, time needed to charge and relatively short life expectancy for a car of this price level. I'll be purchasing a new family vehicle this year, prob 3 row SUV, for around 45k and plan on keeping it for the next 20 years. Just can't do that with an EV.

I’m invested in Charge point

This is like getting you grandma an Android

Karl Martin

He loves to hear him self talk 😂😂😂 any one else could have told this story in 2 mints

Gnarls

Personally, this whole thing was engineered poorly. There should be standardized battery packs for ALL cars. Instead of going to a gas station you go to a battery station. They take out your dead battery pack and swap it for a newly recharged battery pack. 5 minutes in/out.

Gnarls

Amen!

Anthony Mayberry

Gas station pumps have maintenance. The charging networks, obviously, also needs this.

Flow Rebaz

I drive a plug-in hybrid and I hope to go all electric within the next year, this all makes sense to me. I’ve had the car for 3 years, my wife has no idea how to use a charger for my car or their differences

Joe Cowan

My 3 biggest issues with the transition from gas to electric is range anxiety, charging speed any length longer than a gas fill-up (time is our most precious resource), and lack of infrastructure to support super fast charging. I would prefer we take a 50 year plan of hybrids while we build the network and then electric only by 2073. What happens in a blizzard traffic jam or the aftermath of a hurricane? I can see roads being clogged with electric cars that ran out of charge and major roadways being parking lots if politicians keep pushing a model that is not fully built out.

fijillian

Lucky that the woman ran into you. I am glad that you can use your platform to shine a light on this issue.

Toby

The cart before the horse is how our government operates. I’m another 5 years away from an EV

Steven Bryan

Like when apple put usb c ports all over their macs. A laptop that needs adapters to actually connect to anything. Good times.

Calisthenicsnoob

This is why I believe in battery swap by NIO, the stations are maintained, it's indoor weather won't damage it, no cords involved

Oooh-Rai

Bro I'm 26 with a 92' 4runner. I'd also be lost AF with all of that stuff. I totally get what youre getting at with this thought. For something that seems like a such a simple thing conceptually it gets exponentially more complex the more other seemingly simple things get placed between getting the damn thing to go vroom vroom again.

demonpride1975

this doesn't need to be all that deep to be honest, the simple answer is every company should be made to use the exact same charging port, i mean even phone and computer companies are starting to do this with type c cables. so why can't car companies do this, because it makes them money, they want everyone to drive an electric car, but i would refuse if they can't get the basics tow ork properly.

Joe

Laughing out loud! Only fools buy electric cars…

Tod Tod

Bad chargers and being uniformed not good for new ev owners.

sean bouker

This reminds me of people putting diesel or e85 and regular gasoline in a diesel… I would agree with you that they're definitely should be just a universal charger..

Mike F

The standard for the masses is gas is everywhere and <=10min for another 300-400 miles. Meaning gas up and take a wiz and be on your way. So there's a long way to go until the masses buy in.

Robert Rowe

Yup. I own a 2012 Leaf, and for the longest time, had three different apps on my phone, with payment info on file for each. I needed to always have a backup plan if the charger was down or damaged. Reminds me of New Jersey, where gas stations were NOT self-serve for safety reasons. Now, most everyone knows how to pump gas, regardless of the car (rental, new, friend's car, etc). We need to get to that same level with EVs.

MylesInFocus

I can't agree more. I had issues with either chargers not working (mostly Electrify America) or not enough chargers to keep up with demand in the area. I have a 2019 eGolf so it gets dicey with only 120-130 miles of range. If Tesla actually opens the network for other cars this would help immensely, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Jake T

I’ve driven one Tesla and many Audi Etrons. Yes they’re quick, but I hate the regenerative braking in teslas and I hate the sound electric cars make. I am in no time soon planning to get an EV. The charging infrastructure is just too bad and they don’t get enough miles on a single charge. Audis Atleast only get 200 miles max on a single charge. 170 miles if you have it in a mode that saves the battery life. Where as a gas or diesel car can get up to 400-600 miles on a full tank. And when they have problems not just anyone can work on them, pretty much exclusively the dealership.

chris domino

This is a super easy fix on Teslas end. We have CC information saved to Tesla accounts. Just need to set up an intergration to enable 3rd party billing to that CC.

Mordalo

The whole thing is not ready for prime time.

Kyle Wollman

Rich Rebuilds said the exact same thing about his Rivian truck. He loves the truck but doing a trip in it and trying to charge it drove him nuts.

Ah yes, the problem with electric vehicles is the charging infrastructure, not that tens of thousands of African kids are still mining lithium by hand. Good call.

Matthew D

The infrastructure is not there. How can we go from gas to electric without the same availability to charge? Ease of use is important so is availability. We have a long way to go before gas is dead.

Ted Lee

The cart is before the horse. The infrastructure isn’t there yet. Charging stations are expensive and the auto manufacturers will need to spend billions to integrate a nationwide charging system. However, before they can do this, they’ll need to sell many more cars to pay for this new technology system.

Dropa Gear313

It’s like that annoying problem like most IOS or even android cables having to loop it a certain way to initiate the charging.

cd.a

This is why I am hesitant to get an EV car until charging is more widespread. Also, was the S23 mic covered when you were recording, it was nice and clear when you pointed out the bird, but was a bit muffled when front facing.

NY Cat!

Dude!!! In other words just say YO! Tesla and the rest of y’all make the charge stations more user friendly point blank period!!
. 😂

I spent 30 minutes driving around an unfamiliar town at 10 pm searching for a working charger. My Tesla destination hotel charger was broken and three shopping center chargers were either plugged in for long term charging or broken. Fortunately I eventually found a hotel with a working Tesla charger but I had to check in there to use it. I ended up spending twice for hotels that night.
