McLaren's surprising revelation at its 2023 F1 car launch

McLaren is playing down its chances for the 2023 Formula 1 season, revealing a new car that didn’t look dramatically different to last year’s tricky-to-drive machine. While it’s not unusual for teams to manage expectations when they reveal a new car, even by those standards the tone at McLaren was notably downbeat.
The car, named the McLaren MCL60 to mark the 60th anniversary of the team, features some changes, and we’ll get onto those in a moment.
But while McLaren was never expecting to make major strides forward until its new windtunnel, which will come online this year, can have an impact with the 2024 car, the fact it doesn’t even appear confident of being able to win the midfield battle is telling.
So why is the team so downbeat?

If the car development this year is that underwhelming its making both Piastri's move & the payout of Ricciardo wasted effort.

BADBOY

The show car lol

Daniel Harris

I wonder in a year or two if the concensus will be, it wasn't Daniel's fault

HoverPilder

I dont get it. How can owning/using their own wind tunnel give McLaren the information that eluded them for his long? They are using the same wind tunnel Merc is using. Is it an inferior wind tunnel? Is there something lacking with that wind tunnel? The same windtunnel that Merc used to win 8 constructors titles. So what gives here?

David Johnson

McLaren have not been ready since 2012.

Steve Murrell

With a thumbnail declaring "We are not entirely happy", Ricciardo must be thanking his lucky stars McLaren released him from the papaya hell.

Dreamy

McLaren is washed

daniel williams

They're the most frustrating team on the grid – hopefully Norris can find a way soon out so he can actually utilise his talent

Binotto gets massive beating in (British) media for not winning in 2022. Zack came third in 2020 (Ferrari 6th), fourth in 2021 (Ferrari 3rd) and fifth for 2022 (Ferrari 2nd). Does anyone non-biased Brits see the Irony that Zack still has a job and not Mattia?
Wolff inherited a championship winning car from Brawn and came third in his first big rule change with a gradual downfall from 2021. How the hell does he still have a job and not Mattia?

Nicholas Cooper

The wind tunnel argument doesn’t make sense. It’s not like McLaren are not getting all their allocations on a wind tunnel. If it’s their own or not.

[ My Advanced Turbo Exhaust System Concept ]

Want more HP?

I would run supercharger off the belt to compress cylinders for intake stroke but then turbocharge off the exhaust into individual brake lines by making a separation housing that is connected to the cold air impeller of the turbocharger output for individual lines to be connected into the exhaust manifold at the each cylinder which will help assist exhaust stroke by creating vacuum for the cylinder, it will cool the exhaust and push it through the exhaust system instead of sitting in the manifold relying on exhaust stroke to move it further and heating the manifold but also, it will add the oxygen required for the second stage of catalytic converter to convert carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide. The vacuum from the input of turbocharger compression into the manifold will take workload off the cylinder power stocking to push exhaust out anyways increasing the HP but also, the brake lines should be able to thermally resist the exhaust manifold temperatures. You only need small brake line anyways compressed so you don't back compress the exhaust anyways. Honestly, I studied aircraft more than vehicles but…

MERRY ALWAYS!

At least ricciardo won't be there to hurt the results are every race.
(I reckon he'll replace perez, whatever they say)

hot wings

So basically we gonna have the Aston Martin 2022

Malthe Hansen

The livery is also a downgrade.
Google colours could be integrated so well, instead the plastered "chrome" everywhere.
Ew.

This is why F1 is 100% absurd. So they have all this money, build this thing and at the 11th hour realize that its chances of winning a race are ZERO to none. It's just a glamorous for profit business, that's it. Nothing else matters except the worldwide sponsors and their $$$$. F1 is a Big Fat Sham.

Vicavell

In the words of Carlos Sainz: how is this team not winning

Daniel Pries

Miggy get right

I think Aston Martin & Alpine will battle for 4th this year, Mclaren drop to 6th but stay clear of Alfa Romeo & Haas. Think Lando definitely gets a podium though

Miggy get right

As a KMag & Alonso fan I’m praying on McLaren’s downfall, these are good news, at least on face value, to me 🤝

caribman10

It is misnomer to call current F1 "racing when it is actually a tire useage contest supplanted by strategic pit stops. The only "racing" is to qualify, since in over 90% of races the first car to the first turn is the winner. You call that "racing"?

Red_Zed

Got those Google wheels lol

undertowsurf

Go Oscar

Thomas Lovelock

Always been a Mclaren fan,but I doubt if Bruce,Teddy Mayer,or Ron Dennis would have launched a car saying they were aiming for fourth place, and only then hopefully but not yet,you should start the season at least looking and sounding like winners.

Olivér Lantos

This McLaren is ugly af.

RockSolitude

This really makes me worried for Oscar Piastri. Finally joining the grid in his rookie season only for the team and car to have the performance and attitude of a soggy biscuit while Sauber, Aston Martin and Alpha Tauri expect to progress and do battle with Alpine? I really hope he doesn't get Mick Schumacher'd or Vandoorne'd. I hope he finds another spot on the grid soon, Lando and Oscar couldn't leave McLaren fast enough.

RockSolitude

When will McLaren get in personnel who know how to design and develop a car? They have been constantly disappointing, lagging behind and on the backfoot with development and their inability to design a car since at least 2013. Maybe even as far back as 2009. "It's the wind tunnels fault" is pure copium and yet another excuse in a long line of excuses. That wind tunnel was state of the art back in the early 2010s yet their cars had many of the same problems then as they do now. McLaren have major systemic problems and it's not the facilities or equipment they are using.

Pat Hynes

Piastri suddenly looking at mark like, what have we done

Nicholas Heath

Way to mispresent what they actually said The Race….

here's the full quote you're choosing to ignore:

“We identified multiple areas of opportunities,” said new team principal Andrea Stella when asked by The Race about where the 2023 car has been improved. “The good news is that pretty much all of them have been addressed. I wouldn’t want to be too specific, but certainly they have to do predominantly with aerodynamics. Aerodynamics is the name of the game in Formula 1 so it’s no mystery. But there’s some more areas, for instance in terms of interaction with the tyres. There’s some work that we needed to do and this was done over the winter. There’s some other areas of the car that will be improved by developments in the early stages of the season. So, we are happy. Not entirely happy for the launch car, but optimistic that we should take a good step soon.”

Simon

It looks like a solid midfield runner which should put McLaren ahead of Alfa Romeo and Williams

James M

A disappointing pre season from McLaren is a tradition now

Andy Clifford Karting

God damn it, McLaren… Lando has so much talent and yet they continue to limit the ceiling for his success. Hopefully they get things right early in the season so we can see both Lando & Piastri in the top 6!

Marko

Probably the second or third best driver lineup yet they will drive shit.

Mike Lewis

So we can look forward to exiting in Q1 and missing points. Great. McLaren really is trying to make the Mercedes jump decision easy for Lando aren't they.

Mitja Bonča

It will be good enough for mid to back pack.

Bishop Dredd

I found James Key missing at the launch event to be very worrying… Hope he was just busy or ill or something

Oliver Beames

Sandbagging.
