Camping in a thunderstorm – Heavy Rain, thunder & lightning wild camp in Scotland

Part 1 of the trip can be found here

Camping in a thunderstorm – Part 2 of our 3 days hiking and wild camping trip to the Cairngorms in Scotland. The weather was brutal at times. Mother Nature threw at us strong wind and heavy rain and it was a little nervy when the thunder and lightning joined the party. I don’t recommend camping in a storm, especially thunder & lightning. If it had been on the forecast we wouldn’t have gone ahead with the trip.

My Terra Nova Southern Cross 1 tent performed superbly though. I do have a discount code and link below to save you a few quid on the Terra Nova/Wild Country website if you use this link. and Use code PAULM20 to get 20% off all other full price items on the Terra Nova website

MASSIVE thanks to YOU. I couldn’t do this without your support.

Wrong bottle, brilliant….

Dessie Diamond

Bloody hell Paul, that was a proper storm and no mistake. I was out hiking today and got a good soaking but nowhere near what you endured. Thanks for sharing

Mike Kennedy

I have a ham radio license. When I heard you talk about loneliness I thought about many ham radio people bringing a small radio set up to communicate with friends, or make new friends. Ham licenses are easy to get now(at least here in the USA). It might be an option worth investigating.

David Butler

I’d love to know how you get the flow rate like that on the be free. What am I doing wrong?!

Steve

C'mon Paul what are the Munros, what are the lochs, lovely Scottish scenery but a bit of where you've actually been wouldn't go amiss.

Brilliant video Paul can’t beat Scotland especially when Mother Nature opens the window.

Simon Ward

I do like the milk powder idea, certainly going to add to my food list next time I go out. So out of the three of you who carried the most weight or larger volume ? Interested to know.

Dan Bonser

Haze would have got in that river Paul 🤡

Ah I see where you were now, the White Mounth 5 round Loch Muick. Fantastic day(s) out. Glad to see that the Cairngorms rolled out her entire splendour for your visit. I was smiling the whole time knowing exactly how you felt. Haste ye back!

PS
Love the plastic bags in the shoes Paul, cheap way to keep the feet dry
Do You use plastic bags at the grocerystore?
Much cheaper than sandwich bags .
You might try bringing leather gloves along,
Protects the hands against cuts and blisters and burns .
Keeps the hands warm also .
Mike.

trike life

Scotland is so beautiful, it's a shame the weather hid that from you guys on this trip. But man did your gear get tested. Glad to see you stay in good spirits throughout. Piss poor weather can really bring your mood down if you let it. Thanks for sharing, Paul.

tubefreakmuva

'wrong bottle' – 🤣

John Scott Mills

Bloody hell that rain is right bad. Good job you're inside the tent great video nether the less john from Sheffield in Great Britain ENGLAND

Ian Griffiths

‘Wrong bottle’ brilliant! That’s a mistake you’d only make once Paul. I like these multi day videos I find them much more interesting than the ‘one night stands’ although I understand that one nighters are easier to arrange at short notice. Was there not a bothy you could have bailed out to when the heavens opened? Always worth a thought when in Scotland. A great video Paul, thanks.

M. Hernandez

Plenty o' water!

Kev Cowie

Your post is well-timed with you hiking through the Queen’s favourite part of the UK as her funeral cortège left nearby Balmoral today. The lodge at Glas Alt Shiel in the wooded area on the opposite bank of Loch Muick on your descent from Broad Cairn was a favourite spot for the Royal Family to have many picnics in that area.

I'm a rambler, I'm a rambler from Manchester way…

Kevin Ellis

Reminds me of when I walked Pen y Fan (did you do that one when I did it? (PF))
