Darren Falconer

I know it's obvious he was going to file the plastic housing to fit battery but because iv seen weird shit on this channel my jaw dropped thinking he was going to file the battery haha

Darren Falconer

I had the Tamiya Super Hornet, my mate had the grasshopper. I still remember spending the whole night building it and not realising I had the suspension parts mixed up and had to strip it all back haha.
One day I upgraded all the electronics and built a cooling intake, I felt so proud of myself.

JR

I think you should start doing more racing videos. It seems rc racing 🏁 is starting to make a come back. I know for sure out here in Arizona

jason elliott

Great video keV. Lov the racing vids. Great topic too love the vintage 1/10 racers. I too dreamt about all the upgrades I wanted for my thunder shot.

Ngoc Phan

Howick RC car madness

Omg love the old akool rides. I still have my ZXR and my RC10 from back in 91 when I was 15 and racing… miss those days. There is something special about the old cars and the fact that they were kits and you built them which was part of the fun. Love your channel mate… looks like you guys have got a cool community of RC enthusiasts in the UK.

Shelby Jackson

I really like watching these indoor race days Kev, It makes me wish I had an indoor track and a Manta Ray.

Mason De Gaulle

Ah, Manta Ray. My friend's older brother had one, was a weapon (at the time).

TheGirlox

Y u using honey combs on carpet tho?

SRTHAR77 D4

The dreaming before sleeping was the thing that made me so happy in the 90's!faster motors and stuff, cars 1/8 buggy was my dream

Samantha Joyce

gooooooooooodddddd job kev

Daniel Schenström

Hey man! That was my first hobby grade RC car too and just as you I still have mine with its now terribly beat up body. Regarding the chassi there was a fibre reinforced chassi released for the Manta Ray later which is the same as the top forces but not carbon fibre. That's what I currently run on mine. That chassi kit didn't include the protective plastic undertray with obvious results. Still love this period of buggy designs.

Emil Nilsson Swe

Kev, this might be one of youre best vids. Love these vintage cars and what they can do with a proper driver 👌

Jacen Grey's Endor Airbnb

Really impressed. I thought the Manta would get monstered but it didn't. Good job Kev. More vintage stuff!

Craig Robinson

A Manta Ray was my first RC car

Farmer Fpv

Kev, you crack me up when you say the motor has some compression. It's an electric combustion engine. 😂😂I know what you're saying, it just sounds funny, lol. Excellent video, buddy! I love vintage RC cars.

Samuel R

4:48 what is this music? I've been looking everywhere for it

Allan Mulgrew

In the early 90s i had a toy grade car, it was really good actually, but it used the manta ray bodyshell weird how that happens

I resurrected my original ProCat from 1990, it hadn't been out on a track since 1991, until last week at a Vintage meet in Cardiff.. I was proud as punch to see it running again 😎 it can still cut the mustard!

PaddyPatrone

I still have my old Tamiya Dirt Thrasher. Same car as the manta Ray, different body. Was my first real rc car

RC Champ India

Wow video 😯

Typ4evrPDX

Wow. Its like I fell in love with you. Then fell out of love with you. Then back in love. Your love for Tamiya buggies goes straight to the feels.

Samuel Gendler

Well done on keeping tabs on your original RC cars. My first was from the very bottom of the Tamiya range (I, too, had to save for ages via a paper round) – some desert vehicle thing whose name I can't even remember. All I remember was how slow and basically useless it was. Fortunately, I had friends who were also into RC and managed to make better selections. I remember a grasshopper and a monster truck. I eventually graduated to a Hotshot, which wasn't just loads better than my previous car, but also had far more articles about it in the magazines, with suggested improvements and aftermarket parts. That was my first real introduction to mechanical things. I remember removing the front drivetrain to save weight and make it faster when racing on grippier surfaces, then putting everything back together to race around at the park, upgrading motors, swapping pinions to optimize gearing, building independent suspension systems to eliminate the front and rear monoshock, etc.

But mostly, I remember how utterly dishonest the Tamiya marketing materials were, showing cars flying through the air off of steep sand dunes in much the way your xmax is actually capable of today. But those cars were nowhere near being able to do that kind of thing. Not only would those landings have destroyed the suspensions and drivetrains, but they simply weren't fast enough to launch 20 feet into the air as depicted in the videos,. sand flying off the wheels. On any kind of deep sand, they didn't really have enough grunt to get much air at all, and that's with a tiny pinion and aftermarket motor.

But those experiences are why I enjoy your channel today. I haven't driven an RC car in more than 30 years, but watching you and your friends enjoy them so much has been a really fun revisiting of the past. I've been tempted to go spend a bunch of cash on an xmaxx but I know I'll enjoy it for a short span and then it will end up sitting on a shelf, so I'll just continue to enjoy RC cars vicariously through you. Keep it up!

SOMNIOHM

🤩Great video!

David Jenkins

Is there any reason why you couldn't race with the carbon fiber chassis?

Jim Shableau

Lol my first one I saved for was the grass hopper and never stopped love the hobby

Making Dirt Fly

Kev! You said you were going to race the original manta ray one last time after rebuilding it. What are you waiting for?

“pinch” the steering… 🤣 I haven’t heard somebody use the term pinch for stealing in for ever lol
