Rivian R1S Family Review – Car Seat, Stroller, Vents, Interior Space, & More

We meet up with some friends who brought their 3 kids along to help us see if the Rivian R1S is a good family vehicle. In this video we install 3 car seats including a rear facing infant seat, check the space on the inside, and discuss other family / kid related pros and cons.

Thank you for that! As a family with kids it was great seeing how things fit. If the option was available I rather go for the longer wheel base. Even 5in would help so much! Granted the car still needs to fit in a typical garage.

Can someone please come up with a BEV Minivan!!!!!? Ultium or Hyundai/ Kia preferably. As a family with 3 small kids this wouldn’t work.

Just keep the minivan. There is nothing better for a family of 4 to 5 at that age. And let’s be honest the kids will trash whatever car you have. Keep the van for 6 years then you can consider a car if this type as a replacement . In 20 years you will be in the market for another van for your parents…. 🙂

Being a longtime car and truck enthusiast, I would recommend Diono car seats. Game changers. The basic Graco and common brands are too bulky and take up too much space. Did the sunroof not having a retractable cover not bother you guys at all as a current or summer month annoyance? I literally just found out there is not retractable interior sunroof cover and it's kind of a deal breaker for me

6:10 i don’t think the spare tire in the frunk is good when you are in a crash 😬

You could buy two Honda minivans for the price of one Rivian. 😂

A minivan was made for this situation, and not an SUV. Have you noticed that a standard minivan takes 3 in the third row as standard while an SUV is just two in more than 95% of the cases. The choice is dependent on one's family structure IMHO.

Great review!!!

When your knees were hitting in the front passenger, are you sure that the seat height was all the way down? Seemed like it wasn't.

I love our EVs (VW ID.4 and Model 3 SR+) and would not change them.

But prior to that we had a Toyota Sienna LE for many years when our two sons were younger (now 13 and 15). Without a doubt, minivans are THE PERFECT vehicle. Practical, with immense flexibility. I would buy another minivan over a crossover/SUV any day of the week. (The VW was a compromise.)

For now though we don’t have any in the US at this time. Europe and Asia are far ahead of us.

When we start getting them, I will be giving them a good hard look. Far superior to pickups and SUVs!!

I clicked on this thinking it was an Ed sheeran song. My baad

Very good video, I’ve yet to see anyone do such a thorough R1S walkthrough with an actually family.

My 3 kids are 18 months apart and this wouldn’t have been practical when they were all under 5yo old. Now that they’re 8,6, and 5 this is perfect.

Too bad I have to wait until 2024 for my R1S.

Surprised how difficult it was to fit things. Granted that's a large stroller, but it's notable that it fits in a minivan but not this SUV. I'm partial to full-size trucks and SUVs (I'm 6'5") and these Rivians are more 3/4 scale, so they don't appeal to me that much. Also, I'm baffled how the vehicle got through testing and release without a way to manually select 3rd row air without the seatbelts clicked in. It's such an obvious issue that you guys ran into immediately with the dogs, and now with the little kids… odd oversight. It was nice to know the spare fit in the frunk but would have been nicer had it been designed to do so intentionally, with a better fit. Also, not great to hear that some newer production vehicles might lack power outlets in the frunk. That's a useful feature that I'd be sorry to lose if I was getting this. Frankly, I want all electric vehicles to offer as many power options as possible.

Also, I don't share the aversion to minivans that some do. I've always thought they were some of the coolest vehicles. Mostly because I appreciate all the little built-in features that other cars usually don't have.

You don't need to install most infant car seats with isofix, I'm actually not aware of any that can't be installed with just a seatbelt

My Tesla Weekend

A bit tighter in there than I expected, but I love the lateral sliding on the 2nd row.

I would stay with the Honda. I’m sure someone will come out with a EV minivan. Although we made it work with three kids in a Honda Accord.

It's much shorter than T 👀

Can you trick the rear vents by plugging seatbelt extenders in when you are hauling pets? Have a feeling it work with seats up, but wondering if you can still plug them in while seats are folded.

Loving this new type of review, haha. And lovely girls cooperating too.

With a rearward facing car seat behind, you sadly have to accept to have the back of the seat in front a bit more upright than you'd like in many cars… I'm sure many have said before already but Isofix is the European standard and LATCH is the one in US. I much prefer the LATCH system from a usability standpoint (Don't know from a safety standpoint but I'm sure its good enough). Our family have one LATCH car seat for our travels in the US, one Isofix seat for our own car in the UK and one just strap it in with the seatbelt car seat for our travels in Europe. (European rental cars are tiny in comparison…)

There's nothing wrong with a minivan… Or Daddy wagon as we like to call them. Booked one for our first US visit post baby and got a Toyota Sienna rental. With the 3rd row down we got all our luggage, a Radio flyer wagon to bring back to Europe similar to what your family had, and our baby stroller not even collapsed in the trunk. Certainly practical and with US size roads and parking lots it didn't even feel big. Truly brilliant! But… still prefer to try other more normal cars so have rented a SUV size (as usual) since haha, still enough space.

Thanks for this new angle of review. I'd love an R1S (Or T) in UK but think it will still be massive. It's even wife approved too. Hoping to be able to rent EVs (these in particular) in the US as we usually do in Europe soon. (Hopefully you wouldn't need a million different charging apps to charge without being ripped off as in Europe too)

I'm sure the third row vents could be fixed with a software toggle. Great video all around, very informative.
