Winter Camping: What To Look For In A Snow Shovel

The Secrets Of Choosing And Using A Snow Shovel

Snow shovels are often undervalued for winter camping and winter travel.

In fact, a snow shovel is probably one of the most important pieces of winter equipment you can take with you on a winter journey.

In the video I explain why. I also discuss some of the features I think are worth looking for in a good snow shovel.

A snow shovel allows you to move snow quickly and efficiently. This ability to move snow is always useful but in some situations could be essential to survival.

You may have to get a skidoo unstuck and avoid being stranded miles from anywhere, unable to walk out due to the depth of snow. You may need to dig out an emergency bivouac or build up snow for an emergency snow shelter such as a quinzee.

This video discusses this and other reasons why a snow shovel is one of the most important tools you can carry in winter.

I hope the video also gives you some good pointers to what features to look for.

Thanks Paul. I have mitts rather than gloves and was stupidly going to buy a t-grip because it was a bit cheaper. Helpful tips.

Great video Paul. Thanks for sharing.

Smooth Gefixt

That's some helpful advice! Nice!

Woodsman Spirit

Good advice on the shovel Paul, especially the taping on the handle. I recently acquired my first snow shovel from a charity shop, looks like yours and looked like it had not been used, I paid $5 CDN for it…I think I got a bargain!

Hey Paul! Very good video. Can you please tell me the exact name of your shovel ? I'm a canadian prepper and all i see mostly are PLASTIC shovel or some with cheap weak handles. So far, i didn't saw like your's and it look way better then others i keep seeing on the market. Thanks.

Your video is very professional and well done. You made some great points.  I'm just hoping to be able to NOT have to use my snow shovel in a few more weeks.  It has been so bad here in Ohio that I'm now using a tractor with an end loader to move snow out of the drive.

Wintertrekker

Yes the shovel is a must on a sled hauling trip. I also use a D handle and find it better than a T grip. Replacement plastic D handles can sometimes be found in our hardware stores here for home snow shovels.  One might be able to retrofit one of these onto a T grip camping shovel.

Good old school military shovel is always on my list.
However I must admit that this Snow Shovel looks like nice thing to slide on it downhill .
