PYRAMID IN ROME and Aurelian Walls | Roman History Documentary

Have you ever heard about the pyramid of Cestius? The best-preserved ancient pyramid in the world is located in the beautiful city of Rome. Although it might not look huge in the pictures it’s towering over the contemporary Roman infrastructure. Built during the ancient times (1st century BC) it gives us surprisingly detailed information about its construction. Thanks to the inscriptions we know that it was a funerary monument of the member of Epulones, Gaius Cestius, and that it was erected in exactly 330 days.

TOMBS AND RUINS OF DEIR EL-MEDINA:

Its preservation is quite paradoxical (more details in the video). It was incorporated into the city walls built by the Roman emperor Aurelian in the 3rd century AD. As an experienced army commander he knew that Rome needed new ramparts (the previous ones were erected almost 7 centuries earlier by the Roman King Servius Tullius) so one of the most impressive ancient architectural projects began. In the 4th century the walls were improved by Maxentius, and almost one century later by Honorius. Today we can admire its impressive remains, which are an integral part of modern Rome.

Let’s explore lesser known parts of the eternal city (and rarely presented on YouTube). Porta San Paolo also known as Porta Ostiensis, Porta Ardeatina, Porta Appia, the Arch of Drusus, Porta Latina, as well as, obviously, aforementioned pyramid of Cestius. Let’s learn more about ancient Egyptian trends in ancient Rome, a history of the walls of Aurelian, and much, much more!

Explored in December 2022.

It’s a must-see video for all of you, who visit Italy or Rome – the eternal city for the first time. To appreciate and cherish the magic of the place before you travel to Rome watch this. My vlog / full documentary will give you a little taste of ancient wonders: ancient architecture, ancient beliefs, and ancient history.

great review of the Eternal City !!

SculptyWorks

Well, you know what that means: You need to go back when the pyramid is open, and show us the inside. I've never been there either. 😊 👍❤

Hey ASG, I have seen that wall that nearly encircled Rome. The sheer scale of it is hard to describe but it had me scratching my head. I didn't see the pyramid though. No one even told me about it. I was only there for a week and it was 45 degrees so you could only go out for short periods. Big shout to you and amazing camera man.

A Pyramid?..in Rome? WHAT?? Lol. I guess it's safe to say if not for the Pyramid, Cestious would have been forgotten by history. Those walls are mightily impressive! Great video and best of luck with your new Patreon support. Hope to see more soon. 🤞🤘😁🖖🇨🇦

You are a walking encyclopedia of historical facts. 🤓 I toured Rome when I lived in Germany. The tour guide was nowhere near a match for you.
